How to Enhance life of Anilox
Apex International - Asia Pacific
We speak ink, glue & coating transfer. Fluently.
Anilox is the most critical component in the printing process that can have a significant influence on the print quality. A common question printer frequently ask is, "What is the expected life of an anilox?" Unfortunately, there's no simple answer. The lifespan of an anilox roll or sleeve greatly varies and depends on How they are handled and maintained during their use. To maximize the lifespan of an anilox, printers should adhere to several basic guidelines.
Proper Installation of Attachments and Accessories eg., Gears and bearings
To ensure the proper installation of attachments and accessories, use the correct tools and methods for installation. Always opt for genuine spare parts to avoid damaging the journals and negatively impacting the Total Indicated Runout (TIR) of the anilox.

Proper Cleaning Practices
Clean anilox rolls /sleeves immediately after a press run to remove ink residue. Use cleaning liquids and methods compatible with the ink chemistry, ensure the cleaners are within a pH range of 5 to 11. Avoid aggressive chemicals like chlorine, ammonia, or highly acidic cleaners, as these can damage the ceramic layer and cause under-corrosion. Additionally, protect the inner surface of anilox sleeves from cleaning liquids to prevent the deterioration of the inner composite structure.
Regular Audits of the Anilox Rolls
Conduct regular audits of the anilox, at least once every six months, to assess the overall volume and identify and address problem areas. Use these audits to develop countermeasures and establish a maintenance framework to extend the anilox lifespan

Additional Best Practices
Incorporate additional best practices, such as using magnetic filters in the inking system to arrest metallic or foreign particles and prevent score lines on the anilox. Ensure proper alignment between the anilox surface and the blade, choose the correct doctor blade for the application, and maintain minimal pressure between the anilox and the blade.
Extra Tips for Longevity
Use coated doctor blades to reduce friction and wear, avoid and replace the leaking end seals, do not run the anilox dry. By diligently following these practices, printers can significantly extend the life of their anilox rolls, ensuring consistent print quality and reducing the frequency of replacements.
Proper Handling & Storage
Handle anilox sleeves with care, avoid excess wobbling or up down movement when mounting/demounting on the mandrel. Store them vertically to maintain stability and use cushioned or rubber surfaces for resting to absorb impacts during storage/handling.
By adhering to these comprehensive guidelines, printers can ensure the prolonged efficiency and quality of their anilox, thereby enhancing the overall printing process.
