How the English Language has Developed

The improvement of the English language has happened in three phases:

  • Old English

Eft he axode, hu e?re eeode nama w?re te hi of comon. Him w?s geandwyrd, t?t hi Angle genemnode w?ron.

  • Middle English

In tat lond ben trees tat beren wolle, as togh it were of scheep; whereof men maken clothes, and all ting tat may ben made of wolle.

  • Modern English

I told the Deputies that by one of the Resolutions it would appear that they were empowered to give information of the disposition & of the existing state of matters in the four Counties above mentioned.

Each phase is characterized by distinct influences and their resulting changes to the language’s vocabulary, syntax, grammar and pronunciation.
