How Emotions Can Make Us Superheroes or Villains of Our Own Stories

Today, I am diving into a topic that's both exciting and mysterious: emotions, based on my experiences last week delivering doHow? for Execution Excellence to my clients. We might not realize it, but these feelings inside us can have a massive impact on our behaviour. Let's explore how both negative and positive emotions, can shape the way we act, based on our past experiences – the source of our Mindset.

Negative Emotions: The Villains

Picture this: We wake up on a Monday morning, and our alarm clock didn't go off. We are late for work, we missed our favourite breakfast, and it is raining outside. How do we feel? Probably not like a superhero, right? That's because negative emotions like anger, sadness, frustration, and guilt can be like the villains of our story, ready to wreak havoc on our day.

1. Anger: When we are angry, it's like the Hulk taking over. We might snap at our friends or family, say things we don't mean, or even do something impulsive. But here's the trick: We can learn to control our anger and use it for good. Instead of smashing things, channel that energy into solving problems or standing up for what's right.

2. Sadness: Feeling sad is like being trapped in a rainy day. It can make us want to hide under the covers and avoid the world. But sadness can also be a powerful motivator. It's okay to feel sad sometimes, but not letting us being down for too long, is the path to self-drive. Use it as a reminder that there are things we care about and want to change.

3. Frustration: When we can't figure out the cause for a serious customer complaint or can't open that stubborn jar of cookies, frustration can take over. It might make us want to give up or even throw a tantrum. But remember, every superhero faces challenges. Take a deep breath, ask for help, or try a different approach. Frustration can be a stepping stone to success.

4. Guilt: Guilt is like a shadow that follows you around, reminding you of mistakes you've made. It can lead to negative behaviour by making you feel unworthy, incompetent, or ashamed of your actions. But here's the secret: Guilt can also be your conscience, guiding you to make amends and learn from your errors. Use guilt as a motivation to do better and make things right.

Positive Emotions: The Superheroes

Now, let's switch gears and talk about the superheroes of emotions – the positive ones, including Happiness, Love, Excitement, Gratitude, and more!

1. Happiness: When we are happy, it's like us having a superpower that can brighten up the whole world. We are more likely to be kind, helpful, and creative. Using our happiness to spread joy to others, whether it's through a friendly smile or a compliment, is the key to creating supporters and followers. Our positive energy can be, and is, contagious!

2. Love: Love is like a shield that protects us and those around us. When we love someone, we are willing to go to great lengths to make them happy and keep them safe. Love can motivate acts of kindness and selflessness, turning us into a real-life hero, through random acts of kindness to people around us, which is the recipe for success.

3. Excitement: When we are excited, it's like having a rocket strapped to our back. We are ready to take on challenges, explore new things, and tackle adventures head-on. Embracing our excitement and use it to learn, grow, and make our dreams come true, is the secret to self motivation and self development.

4. Gratitude: Gratitude is a magical power that can transform our perspective and kindle our growth. When we are grateful for what we have, we become more content and appreciative. Using gratitude to strengthening our relationships, making the most of every moment, and inspiring others to do the same, is the path to exceptional leadership.

So, what is the moral of the story? Emotions are like the colours on our palette, and we are the artist of our own life: I am the creator of my universe – Aham Brahmāsmi – ??? ???????????, a great saying from the Upanishad. We get to decide how to paint our world. Negative emotions may try to be the villains, but we can turn them into opportunities for growth and change. Positive emotions are our superpowers, ready to help us be the hero we aspire to be.

Remember, even superheroes have their off days, and it's okay to feel a wide range of emotions. Understanding them, managing them, and using them for good, is the greatest gift we have in our epic adventure called life. We have the power within us to shape our behaviour and become the hero we want to be.

So, the next time we are faced with a choice, we can ask ourselves, "What would my superhero self do?" Embrace our emotions, harness their energy, and go out there to save the day and make a difference to the people around us!
