How Emotional Intelligence Can Improve The Future of Work: Days 13 to 18

How Do Business Leaders improver their access to higher levels of EQ in the future of work?

In learning more about emotional intelligence, I raise this question today.

In case you are reading this newsletter for the first time, you will notice that the days are numbered for each entry - however, where a human is busy (me), I am not able to write daily, as the newsletter was supposed to be part of my daily reflection reading - Daniel Goleman's famous book; Emotional Intelligence - Working with Emotional Intelligence.

Having set the scene somewhat, let me try to unlock the question I am looking at.

In the first instance Business Leaders all have heads agreed!

The great reshuffle has been criticized as a failure of modern office leadership.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. Rather, the question here should be, how do we teach modern leaders how to deal with emotion intelligently?

EQ and the future of work should focus on humans learning to understand their emotions more as they go to work. If a man or woman has a higher level of self-awareness, they are likely to lead better in various work-based situations perhaps.

Life Experiences

Our daily interactions and learning about our emotions are so varied in life experiences that we fail to exert our best leadership practices sometimes.

My Abused Life as a Child

Another way to put it is this. I was abused as a child, so regardless of my EQ level, I may face many issues/problems in my self-awareness state in the future. And I certainly did. Forget about leadership development for a moment. Due to trust issues, it was difficult for me to connect emotionally with partners. It affected my memory deeply.

When I saw good leadership courses, say on LinkedIn Learning, I wanted to engage and learn how to increase my self-awareness. Please remember I am a former teacher, and despite my previous long training in the field of teaching others, I still had my emotional scars. My healing is still underway.

Now back to my LinkedIn Learning example, to date I have accessed more than 150 courses, adamantly I love learning - however, and I encourage you all to have a look at my profile after this reading and see my list of courses - anyhow - my point here is that regardless of whatever course I do I am still wrestling with my past emotions which are memories deep into the brain.?

Through counselling yes I have been able to access those supressed memories and work through each type of abuse. That said I am in one sense a better leader really - although yes, I have accepted my abuse and cried and tried to heal - the leadership development in me - is that - it`s in me until I enter another traumatic experience where my emotions could be sensitive to different scenarios - either based on my past or present state.

Hopefully, you understand where I am going here - the brain is so sensitive in life, and no matter how much we heal - today's Business Leadership requires multiple directions of EQ skills that need constant refilling. Further, we must build and develop better integration into daily leadership practice.?

Whilst I am not going to discuss different self-awareness strategies today in detail, I will state that I feel self-reflection in leadership development for greater EQ skills like Self-awareness is the better way to go.?

Now reading Goleman's work, I see that one study looked at how kids with high EQ still form into scenes of the life of being led to academic failure, alcoholism, and criminality.

Thus, EQ is a constant moving cycle of change shaped in all stages of emotions in life - the trick is constant engagement into our own inner emotions that can feed more often into daily good leadership performance.

I know it sounds hard, and it is meant to be; as most psychologists state, the brain is very complex and sensitive, so we simply need to care for it and our deeper emotional intelligence to live a healthy mental state long term.

To Be Continued.
