How Emojis Impact Our Workplace Dialogue

One thing is certain: emojis have become a significant part of our communication. It would be hard to imagine a written communication without these small, expressive images to convey our emotions and clarify our intent. This is also the case at the workplace, where the mood in our team chats and professional interactions is considerably lightened up by the use of emojis.

However, they are also interpreted and used differently across generations. Therefore, let us explore together how emojis shape our work communication, enhance our experience and find out what amusing usage we can identify in different generations.

Evolution of Corporate Communication

Prior to the emoji era, corporate communication was highly formal and lacking any visual elements. Workplaces felt more rigid and hierarchical, while teams had a reduced opportunity to bond over a friendly written conversation. In those pre-emoji times, miscommunications were common, as a specific tone used in writing could easily be perceived as hostile without the aid of any visual cues to state otherwise.

For younger employees, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, emojis are second nature. Representatives of these generations use them to establish a friendly atmosphere in a first email contact, creating a fun chat conversation and communicating official announcements in a more engaging manner. Emojis help them navigate long emails with more enthusiasm, communicate feedback to be better received and create lovely chat conversation that keep you smiling all day.

In contrast, older generations, such as Baby Boomers and Gen X often view this as unprofessional, preferring a more traditional communication. Over the generations, the meaning of emojis has also shifted. Gen Z use emojis in a very creative way rather than their literal meaning.

Lost in Translation: The Generational Emoji Gap

Since emoji meanings evolve at a quick pace, it can be difficult to keep up with the changing interpretations. Here are some surprising and amusing practical examples:

While Baby Boomers are using the ?? to express their acceptance or agreement regarding an idea, young people mainly use this emoji ironically. Did you know that it has been recently voted ‘the most uncool emoji’, due to its dismissive tone?

Another popular emoji ? was previously used to express love for something and appreciation. Being however overused in time, the heart emoji is now seen as cringe-worthy, so if you have to use it, at least put some effort in it, since there is a range of other color options to choose from.

Boomers and Millennials use the ?? emoji to convey the idea of “laughing out loud”, but this has been labeled as ‘uncool’ by the younger generations and replaced by the skull ?? or the crying emoji ??, and symbolize the idea of ‘dying with laughter’.

The generational differences in emoji usage are obvious: older generations tend to interpret emojis literally, while young people often use them in a creative and ironic manner.

Emojis in the Workplace

Emojis play a crucial role in improving communication in the workplace by providing visual cues that help clarify intent and tone. They bridge gaps by adding an emotional layer to written messages. For example, sending an email that states, "Let's discuss your performance," can come across as critical. However, adding a friendly emoji, like a smiley ??, transforms it into a constructive and supportive message.

However, if you are uncertain regarding the use of emojis in a particular business setting, sometimes less is more and it might be best to steer clear of them, or to use what you know. After all, the last thing anyone wants is to be misunderstood or offend a colleague or client. Sometimes the good old-fashioned method of using words can help us avoid uncomfortable situations.

As a conclusion, we cannot deny the fact that emojis have changed the way we communicate inside and outside of our workplaces. They can bridge generational differences or even enhance them, depending on the situation and understanding. While they enrich our everyday communication, they can lead to funny misunderstandings occasionally and sometimes even to conflicts or offences. Overall, embracing emojis has paved the way to stronger connections among colleagues and created a more exciting workplace experience.
