How to Embrace Self-Doubt During Your Military Transition

Hello, LinkedIn community!

Today, I want to address a topic that resonates with many of us: self-doubt.

Whether you're transitioning into a new career, embarking on a personal project, or simply trying to improve an aspect of your life, self-doubt is a common companion. But here's the good news: feeling self-doubt means you're on the right track. It means you're stepping out of your comfort zone and leaning towards growth.

Embracing Self-Doubt

First, take a deep breath. If you're experiencing a rush of negative thoughts and that little voice inside your head saying you can't do it, that's completely normal. Feeling self-doubt signifies that you're challenging yourself. If you never felt self-doubt, it might mean you're not pushing yourself enough. So, let's normalize self-doubt and use it as a signpost that you're moving in the right direction.

Practical Tips to Minimize Self-Doubt

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: Understand that self-doubt is a natural part of growth. Instead of running away from it, lean into it. Accept that it's okay not to have all the answers or to feel unsure.

2. Identify What's True: Separate facts from fears. For example, if you're starting a new business and feel you're not experienced enough, acknowledge the truth: maybe you don't have years of experience, but you do have the passion, the foundational skills, and the willingness to learn.

3. Take Action Without Judgment: Start doing the things that scare you. If you're afraid of speaking in public, practice by recording yourself or speaking in small groups. Don't judge your performance harshly; focus on the act of doing and improving gradually.

Real-Life Example

One of my clients, a personal trainer, wanted to start her own business. Initially, she was paralyzed by self-doubt, fearing she didn't have enough credentials or experience. I encouraged her to start promoting herself on social media, sharing her knowledge and passion for fitness. Over time, with consistent effort, she began to see progress. Her confidence grew as she attracted clients and built her brand.

Lean into Your New Identity

Whatever your goal—becoming a business owner, transitioning to a civilian career, or even tackling personal challenges like parenting—start by embracing your new identity. Tell yourself and others who you are and what you can do. If you're a new mom, remind yourself that you can take care of your baby, even if you don't have all the answers.

Challenge Yourself

I challenge you to lean into your self-doubt. Take that first step towards your goal, no matter how small. Expose yourself to the discomfort of trying something new. Over time, this practice will help you build confidence and minimize self-doubt.

Remember, it's okay to seek support. If you need an accountability partner or a coach to guide you, reach out. I'm here to help you achieve your life and career goals.
