How Embedded Edge Computing Devices can Help Industrial Producers Do More with Digital Transformation

By Stefano Schiavella with 罗克韦尔自动化

Digital technology and connectivity are creating not only new possibilities in industrial operations, but also ever-growing volumes of data. For practical, financial, and security reasons, industrial producers can’t just send all this data to the cloud. They need to keep some of it close to where it’s produced – at the industrial edge.

This is helping drive the adoption of embedded edge computing. These computing devices, deployed next to or even as part of an industrial control system, can facilitate real-time data processing for time-sensitive production applications. They also enable new and better ways to use technologies like advanced analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics that can transform how industrial producers compete. And the devices can reduce cloud data bandwidth and costs.

Simulating Sustainable Energy Solutions

Engineering Hero

When Anton Ristr?m was growing up in a Swedish town of 5,000 people, he wanted to be a pilot.

His father was a pilot in the Swedish Air Force who later transitioned into commercial flying, and for a time, his mother was a flight attendant. When his parents flew together, it became necessary for Anton and his sister to come along.

But Anton also had habit of taking things apart, not only to investigate their inner workings, but also to see if he’d be able to put them back together properly — often, he couldn’t. It should come as little surprise that Anton later blended these two passions in his pursuit of aerospace engineering.

Today, he manages a small team at Aker Solutions that specializes in utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate sustainable global energy solutions like subsea compression. Read more.

Advantech MIO-4370 Brings Powerful Processing to Robotics, Healthcare

MIO-4370

Next-generation applications require extraordinary processing power and agility to bring about the potential needed for critical use cases using AI, such as smart service robotics, industrial automation, healthcare, or high-speed testing.

On the robotics side, one of the coolest examples is the RoomieBot by 研华 , a mobile service robot that is designed to use AI at the edge, machine vision, and natural language processing (NLP) to aid humans working and living in healthcare, retail, and hospitality. This kind of mobile service robot needs modular hardware that blends performance, efficiency, and advanced software support. Read more.
