#edgecomputing has seen incredible growth in terms of popularity and attention in the IoT space as more implementers are seeing the value and power edge solutions can have on an IoT application.?
For those who may be a bit unfamiliar with what edge computing is, in simple terms, it is when the computing “work” is moved closer to the sensor (and not always having to travel up into the cloud). This enables everything from cost savings to more real-time analyzing of sensor data, often resulting in a more reliable service, better user experience, and the ability to support latency-sensitive applications to help end users better and more quickly understand their data.
Teams are realizing that with the faster time to analyze data
It’s no secret what edge computing can bring to an IoT solution – and throughout the history of our podcast, I have had many conversations around the power of edge – but don’t take my word for it, check out what some of our expert Partners below have to say on the topic of how edge computing is impacting the Internet of Things industry.
Tamara Aranbayeva , Head of Marketing at Cox Edge
As someone who's been geeking out on the IoT and edge computing space, I'm thrilled to share my opinion on how edge computing is changing the game. By letting devices process data closer to the source, edge computing eliminates the need for centralized data centers and speeds up response times – which is perfect for those IoT applications that need to make real-time decisions.
Take Industry 4.0, where smart factories and machines are connected and automated. Edge computing is essential. With predictive maintenance
All in all, edge computing is a game-changer for IoT, providing scalability, agility, and cost-effectiveness. With 75 billion IoT devices predicted by 2025, edge computing is the key to unlocking IoT's full potential in multiple industries, from retail to healthcare and beyond!
Romil Bahl , President & CEO at KORE
IoT is focused on creating efficiencies and improving outcomes across hundreds of thousands of applications and use cases. Edge computing is exactly what it sounds like – bringing computing power closer to the edge or the point of data generation.

The term edge is increasingly used broadly and needs specificity -? is it at the device (device edge), a factory or a farm (site edge), or at a network point-of-presence closest to the device (network edge)? With compute power at the edge on manufacturing equipment, for example, when sensors alert temperature going above pre-set thresholds, that data can be analyzed and reaction time can happen in mere milliseconds.
In effect, the latency and network traversing times to make that same decision centrally would be much longer. Generalizing this concept, automation becomes smoother and can be more widely deployed, whether that’s in warehousing, manufacturing, fleet, agriculture, or elsewhere.
Additionally, those applications that require critical, real-time data analytics

1 年In addition to the examples mentioned, it is worth noting that Vision AI applications are another area where lower latency provided by edge computing can be highly beneficial. As the market for smart cameras continues to grow, so does the file size of videos, leading to increased costs and latency. Edge processing can enable real-time data analytics by analyzing video footage directly at the edge. This is also highly beneficial for applications that work with data that infringes on your personal rights such as video material. While the article covers several benefits of edge computing, there is an underlying concept that I feel is missing in the discussion. As IoT solutions scale up, it will inevitably require remote access to edge devices. This includes tasks such as rolling out application updates to a large number of edge devices, monitoring devices or developing applications in an iterative work process. However, establishing a secure connection and exposing required features on the device requires an underlying structure that can facilitate this process. This is a critical consideration that needs to be factored in when designing and implementing edge devices & applications.
