How Easily Do You Ask For Help?

For the past four years I’ve been asked to facilitate a workshop for up and coming female teen tech wizards who’ve been selected to participate in a paid summer trainee program at one of the tech companies where I coach.
The most emotionally challenging question I can ask them is “How easily do you ask for help?”
And so I put the same question to you: how easily do you ask for help?
I’m guessing that for most, the answer is “not all that easily.” Why? Because it does make us vulnerable to let others know what we need, what we can’t do by ourselves, what we don’t yet know.
That’s why so often people feel like they will appear “stupid” or “needy” if they ask for help.
And yet, think about it. Asking for help can be a precious gift. When we let our vulnerability show, we provide others with a more intimate glimpse into who we are.
When you ask for help in the workplace, you display your willingness to be a learner. You are taking your career seriously and recognize that you can’t ever know everything all at once. You do need help in order to grow professionally.
Take some time to evaluate with whom and when you feel blocked from asking for help. Then determine a step you can take to begin to break through that blockage. And then - do it! Yes, do it! Don’t let yourself stay blocked.
And, I’m going to ask for your help!
