How To Download R Language For Statistics


HOW TO USE R IN STATISTICS:        

R acts as an alternative traditional statistical package. R is an open source computing language. It’s is compatible for Linux, Windows, UNIX and other platforms. R allows for users to study freely distribute and improve softwares. R is an implementation of the S program language. R performs a variety of basic to advanced statistical and graphical technique. R advancements help improve statistical education. In order to install R you can download it online for your appropriate computer software.


To install R on your Mac OS X, Linux, Windows computer, follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://www.r-project.org/
  2. Under “Getting started” you should see “R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows and MacOS. To download R , please choose your preferred CRAN mirror .”
  3. Under “Getting Started”, click on the “download R” link.
  4. On the next page, you should see the CRAN description “The Comprehensive R Archive Network is available at the following URLs, please choose a location close to you. Some statistics on the status of the mirrors can be found here: main page , windows release , windows old release . If you want to host a new mirror at your institution, please have a look at the CRAN Mirror HOWTO .”

Scroll down to whatever country that you are in and prepare to click under which country you reside in. If you live in the United States click under “The United States”.

5. You will see these school links?“ University of California, Berkeley, CA,

Iowa State University, Ames, IA, Indiana University, University of Kansas, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI, Washington University St.Louis, Duke University NC, Wright State University, Dayton, OH,Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA,National Institute for Computational Sciences, Oak Ridge, TN”

Click on the link that consists of the closest location to you.

6. You will reach the “Download and Install R” screen stating “Precompiled binary distributions of the base system and contributed packages, Windows and Mac users most likely want one of these versions of R:

Click on the R Download that will fit your computer.


If you have a Macbook click on “Download R for (Mac) OS X ” for the Mac installation.

  1. You will reach a screen that says “R for Mac OS X This directory contains binaries for a base distribution and packages to run on Mac OS X (release 10.6 and above). Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2 (and Mac OS X 10.1) are no longer supported but you can find the last supported release of R for these systems (which is R 1.7.1) here . Releases for old Mac OS X systems (through Mac OS X 10.5) and PowerPC Macs can be found in the old directory.”
  2. Scroll down the page until you reach files.
  3. Mac OS X users you will have 3 options to click on.
  4. The first option is R-3.4.1.pkg this file consists of “R 3.4.1 binary for OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) and higher, signed package. Contains R 3.4.1 framework, R.app GUI 1.70 in 64-bit for Intel Macs, Tcl/Tk 8.6.6 X11 libraries and Texinfo 5.2. The latter two components are optional and can be ommitted when choosing "custom install", they are only needed if you want to use the tcltk R package or build package documentation from sources. Note: the use of X11 (including tcltk) requires XQuartz to be installed since it is no longer part of OS X. Always re-install XQuartz when upgrading your OS X to a new major version.”
  5. If this works for your software needs install it, if not keep reading.
  6. The second option is R-3.3.3.pkg this file consists of “R 3.3.3 binary for Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and higher, signed package. Contains R 3.3.3 framework, R.app GUI 1.69 in 64-bit for Intel Macs, Tcl/Tk 8.6.0 X11 libraries and Texinfo 5.2. The latter two components are optional and can be ommitted when choosing "custom install", it is only needed if you want to use the tcltk R package or build package documentation from sources. Note: the use of X11 (including tcltk) requires XQuartz to be installed since it is no longer part of OS X. Always re-install XQuartz when upgrading your OS X to a new major version.”
  7. If this works for your software needs install it, if not read to the last installation step.
  8. The third and final option is R-3.2.1-snowleopard.pkg this file consists of “R 3.2.1 legacy binary for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) - 10.8 (Mountain Lion), signed package. Contains R 3.2.1 framework, R.app GUI 1.66 in 64-bit for Intel Macs. This package contains the R framework, 64-bit GUI (R.app), Tcl/Tk 8.6.0 X11 libraries and Texinfop 5.2. GNU Fortran is NOT included (needed if you want to compile packages from sources that contain FORTRAN code) please see the tools directory . NOTE: the binary support for OS X before Mavericks is being phased out, we do not expect further releases!”
  9. If this works for your software needs install it. This is the last and final installation step. One of these steps should work for your MAC OS X software for your Macbook.


If you are installing R for linux or Windows simply click there webpages. There is only one download. You can click past entry for either one.

  1. For the Windows installation click on Download R for Windows
  2. Subdirectories will appear on the next page. Click on the?install R for the first time link. Once you click this line the R download should get started for your windows computer.
  3. In order to install R on Linux, click on the link that says Download R for Linux link.
  4. Once you open up the download R for Linux page click on the exact name you want to download for your Linux software.
  5. Once you click on the name in the Linux software scroll down until you reach the word “installation”.
  6. Once the installation page for Linux is reached, you will be able to see these words under it “With an appropriate entry in /etc/apt/sources.list (see below for Debian branches other than sid/unstable), the newest R release including recommended packages can be installed using a command sequence like: apt-get update
  7. Copy and paste the words into your Linux database command to install R properly on your Linux software.
  8. Once you have installed R through one of these methods (MAC OS X, WINDOWS, LINUX) then you should be good to go in order to do statistical coding using R.
