6 Habits to Unwind Tension at Work

Finding moments to relax and recharge during your workday can be challenging. However, integrating mindfulness practices into your routine can make a significant difference in how you feel and perform throughout the day.

Last week we celebrated National Relaxation Day, and during September it is RUOK? Day; the ideal time to assist employees in finding moments of calm.

Here are six healthy habits that can shift you into a state of calm and can be effortlessly incorporated into your daily routine.

What are your Grateful for?

Incorporating gratitude into your daily routine can be as simple as keeping a gratitude journal, sharing your appreciation with others, or taking a few moments each morning or evening or both to reflect on what you are thankful for.

Try naming 3 Things you are grateful for each morning and or evening

Gratitude is a powerful practice that can significantly enhance your well-being and relaxation.


Come back to your breath

Box Breathing is a powerful technique used to calm the nervous system.

In fact, even the U.S. Navy SEALs, use this method to manage stress and maintain focus in high-pressure situations.

Box breathing (also known as square breathing or Sam Vritti breath)

Box breathing involves breathing around the shape of a box, it can help to visualize drawing around a box while following an even-count pattern:

Eg: inhale for 4 seconds, hold the breath for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold the breath out for 4 seconds.

Repeat this cycle for 2-5 minutes. The key is to keep the counts even, whether it's 2, 4, 6, or any other count that feels comfortable.

This technique can be practiced anywhere, making it an accessible tool for reducing anxiety, enhancing focus, and promoting overall well-being.


Take Time to Regularly Move

Notice where you are holding tension and gripping, allow the shoulders, jaw and face to soften.

Stretch and move often
Short sessions during the day can be really effective
