How does your Advisory Council help you achieve your mission and vision?

I am grateful for our partners who serve on the ConnectWise Advisory Council. As has been said, “feedback is a gift – and leaders give it generously.” Their contributions, expectations, and value delivered are unquestionable. Last week’s meeting in Tampa produced new insights and reinforced what we thought we knew – but may have missed. By design and iteration, it’s not a “present us content and buy us a steak dinner” experience.

?There are at least five attributes that make our Advisory Council a win-win for everyone. This includes the ConnectWise supply chain including partners, solution partners (vendors), ecosystem, and SMB clients.

1.?????? Why we meet: We meet to share ideas, listen to partners more than we talk, and produce work products that matter to our ecosystem. For example, last week we focused on how Private Equity shapes our industry, the growing adoption of our new Asio platform with AI, continuing to improve the partner experience, and expanding our roadmap as a council for 2024-2025.

2.?????? Who attends: We’ve built an intentionally diverse group of leaders who represent constituencies within the overall IT Nation community. We engage with members in different Modes, business models, sizes, funding sources, and global locations. We add interactions with our Executive Leadership Team, CEO, and other key leaders to increase clarity. One member suggested a framing of “We are not passengers, we are crew” to emphasize the need for everyone to engage.

3.?????? What we do: We believe people support what they help create. We execute workshops with report outs rather than presentation decks. These workshops allow every member time and space to openly share with their teams. We conduct facilitated “thought experiments” and open discussions with goals communicated in advance. Ideas bloom and “aha moments” happen; we simply increase their likelihood by design. We conduct Ask Me Anything sessions with our CEO…and we break bread as part of our fun activities in the evenings.

4.?????? How we apply what we learn: The Advisory Council helps ConnectWise see what can be improved today and what can developed in the future. Between these opportunities are bridges ConnectWise must design, build, and cross. Thomas Edison said, “Vision without execution is hallucination.” There is shared accountability with ConnectWise leaders knowing the efforts of the Advisory Council will be applied and results will be measured.

5.?????? Creating relationships for life: Our members are passionate about helping partners and the entire ConnectWise supply chain. Last week several members were leaving the council with over 12 years of service. Seeing these members, teams, and families grow to achieve their Legacy Plans is extremely rewarding. Our current format moves members to Alumni status for future contributions, or as we remind them, “It’s not goodbye, it’s Alumni!”

Clearly there are many benefits of advisory councils such as strategic guidance, subject matter expertise, network expansion, competitive advantage, impact of new technologies, market dynamics, and community building. These benefits are produced from members who are humble, improvisational ("yes, and..."), and willing to guide change. As we say, they are in the arena, not on the sideline.

Thanks to Jason Magee , Tony Thomas , Arlin Sorensen , Susan Sawyer Rhodes , members of our Advisory Council System, and other ConnectWise leaders, we have direct line-of-sight to positively impact our vision and mission. If your organization can’t say the same, I encourage you to experiment with improvements and/or reach out to share ideas. Advisory Councils that function well produce incredible value. Be the crew, not just passengers.
