How does Solar Energy Actually work?

Energy generated from solar power significantly helps to reduce the cost of electricity, contributes to the electrical grid, and generates backup power for outages or night-time usage when paired with a battery storage solution. Not only does the generation of solar energy reduce environmental harm caused by traditional energy solutions, but it also spurs economic growth and creates job opportunities. Solar energy has so many benefits, so how does solar energy produce energy?

Simplifying Solar

To keep it simple, solar panels absorb energy from sunlight. The PV cells in the panel absorb this energy, producing electrical charges that move in response to the electrical field in the cell. Therefore, when the sun is shining, panels convert the sunlight into direct current electricity (DC). Through this, your solar inverter converts this electricity into alternating current (AC) for use in your home.

Excess generated by the solar panels, not used in your home, is exported back to the grid or used to charge a solar battery. Electricity retailers, such as Ergon, pay a feed-in for any electricity sent back to the grid. Generation, consumption, and export are tracked through a smart meter, providing all the necessary data for electricity billing. Feed-in tariffs change frequently and may be different from the prices below. Feed-in tariff rates vary per state and electricity provider.

Two Types of Solar Technology

Solar Photovoltaic (PV): As stated above, PV cells absorb energy from sunlight. This energy produces electrical chargers that move in response to an internal electrical field within the cell.

Solar Thermal (CSP): These systems use mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight onto receivers that collect solar energy and convert it to heat, which produces electricity, primarily in large power plants.

Installing Solar Panels

Several factors contribute to ensuring solar is suitable for your home. Ideally, a roof that is prepared for solar will be free of rust and shade. In addition to this, the roof should have enough space to fit the system panels. Your system will still produce on cloudy days; however, the production level will be reduced.

System size depends on your energy needs, including energy usage and room for technological advancements. Additionally, choose a reputable installer with experience and accredited certifications to ensure the longevity and efficiency of your system.

Regulations and financial incentives also have a large impact on the installation of solar. Local regulations and permits required vary between states. Financial incentives to increase renewable energy will also play a role in the installation process. These incentives can remove some of the costs towards solar energy.

How is Energy stored?

You can add a Battery Storage System to your existing solar system; however, the inverter compatibility will determine whether you choose a DC or AC-coupled system. Solar batteries allow you to store your solar energy at night and make you less dependent on grid power. Some batteries can protect you against blackouts as the energy stored can be used when grid-connected power fails.

The Future of Solar Power

Expectations for the future of solar are not limited to:

  • Increased demand for renewable energy: With growing awareness of social, environmental, and economic topics, the demand for solar battery systems is bound to happen. Not only is solar an investment for you to save money on your monthly electricity bills, but it is also a commitment to social and environmental sustainability.
  • Technology advancements: With new and improved solar technology comes the optimisation of resources and benefits for those who take advantage of renewable energy. Whether it be a decrease in cost or an increase in productivity, the future of solar is without comparison. Furthering this, more investment means better technology and the development of further battery storage systems.
  • The growth of the electric vehicle market: With technology allowing individuals to charge EVs with their solar and battery storage systems, it is bound that the future of solar will allow individuals to become independent from the traditional grid format. Find more on EVs and EV Chargers.
  • Awareness of environmental issues: Most importantly, the prospect of renewable energy and sustainable outcomes will certainly contribute to awareness.

How we can help

Horan & Bird?started in 2004 and has built one of the?longest-standing solar companies?in Australia. We have over 30,000 customers and have won Master Electrician of the Year five times, along with Australian Small Business of the Year in 2012.

Not all companies are created equal, which also applies to solar companies. That’s why choosing a company with experience is essential, so you can be sure your system is installed correctly and will last for years.

Furthermore, we understand that each solar journey is unique, and our approach is tailored to meet your specific needs. Whether you are a homeowner looking to enhance your energy resilience or a business aiming to meet your corporate social responsibility initiatives, we are dedicated to customising solutions that align with your goals.
