How does solar battery storage work?

Solar battery storage is a way to store excess energy generated by solar panels for later use. This is typically done by positioning large energy storage units outside a building. During sunny periods, the batteries charge up from the excess energy generated by the solar panels, or from the grid at night when energy prices are low.

The energy management system of the battery monitors the charge and discharge levels, and the stored energy can be used to increase the amount of solar energy used on site, generate revenue by offering grid services, provide backup energy, and capture excess energy from wind or solar sources.

In some cases, solar battery storage can also provide an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) for emergency power. By combining solar battery storage with solar PV, organizations can improve their energy management and reduce their carbon footprint.

What solar battery storage system size do I need?

The size of a solar panel storage battery is determined by the intended use and energy consumption. Factors to consider include the amount of electricity typically used during a 24-hour period, the time of day when electricity is used, the size of the solar PV system, and variations in energy prices.

If you already have a PV system, optimizing usage to focus on daylight hours can reduce the required battery size. If you don't have a PV system and use a significant amount of energy annually, obtaining half-hourly metered usage data can aid in determining the optimal battery size for your building.

For backup power, the size of the battery is determined by the amount of energy needed and the duration of backup support.

Can I integrate a battery into an existing solar system?

Integrating a battery into an existing solar system can be a simple or complex process, depending on the initial design of the system.

If the solar panel system was built with the capability to add energy storage later, it is likely to have a "storage ready" inverter that can easily integrate a battery. This means that the battery installation process will be relatively straightforward.

If the solar panel system was not designed with the ability to add storage later, the process can still be done but it may require more work. One option is to install an AC-connected battery with its own inverter and connection to the site. Another option is to replace the existing solar inverter with a model that accepts solar battery storage.
