How Do Short-Term Study Programmes Contribute to Skills Development?

Today’s generation of High School and University students are much more socially aware than their predecessors, actively being more involved in social issues, being more inclusive of others and applying critical thinking to situations in order to best inform their opinion and solve problems.?

These steps toward a more open and broad minded student group are fantastic but there is always more that can be done to help enhance students experiences, talents, independent thinking and skills across all disciplines. One way to achieve this is through study tour programmes which promote educational initiatives that improve both student learning and the development of a community through cultural experiences.

??The advantage of short term, skills-based programmes for students is well demonstrated. Students achieve a higher degree of intellectual development through interactive learning, problem-solving, critical thinking and teamwork.

??Students also improve social development, through interacting with other students, inter cultural relations, social responsibility and greater independence being away from home.

??Together these results promote a more dynamic and engaging way of learning, one that supports not just the development of students but also more collaborative and communicative learning which students can take forward into all walks of life.

Teaching Methodology

Our short-term, skills-based programmes are available for students in the UK, Australia and Singapore. Each programme has an overarching theme whether it be Public Speaking, Robotics or Environment & Wildlife but each programme itself is made up of individual task-based activities with a focus around communicative learning. This style of learning complements a more open approach to learning rather than a linear one in more traditional forms of education in schools. ?

Skills based, communicative learning helps connect students to each other, the community around them and also culture through interesting, dynamic activities that help develop a variety of skillsets. Here are some of the key benefits to these types of ESL programmes:

??Students learn English through their overall theme of the programme, putting less pressure on students to ‘learn English’. This theme also creates numerous learning points aside from language which are skills they can take into other areas of their study.

??Focus on fluency rather than accuracy. Communicative learning has been proven to be a successful form of teaching and is popular amongst both teachers and students due to the more relaxed nature and focus on speaking skills.

??Short term programmes complement the learning students receive at school throughout the year. It’s an opportunity to put their skills to practice but in a more fun, interactive environment.

??Culture is a massive part of the programme, helping develop students’ experiences, open their minds to different ways of life, food and environments which in turn, helps them become more well-rounded people.
