How does the Magsafe achieve 15W fast charging?

The disassemble report for Magsafe

At the press conference, Apple launched a MagSafe magnetic wireless charger that has attracted much attention. This is also Apple's first mass-produced mobile phone wireless charger, marking the official entry of the iPhone into a new era of wireless charging. Promote the development of the wireless charging market.

The Apple MagSafe magnetic wireless charger, as its name suggests, adopts a magnetic design with a built-in magnet that can actively adsorb and align for wireless charging. This can be achieved while charging and playing, breaking the traditional wireless charging method. The main attraction is that it can wirelessly charge the iPhone 12 series at 15W, and other wireless chargers is only up to 7.5W. So as Apple's first mass-produced wireless charger, it has also made a special design, what is the inside of it? Here We will share with you the detailed disassembly of this product.

TThe Apple MagSafe magnetic wireless charger comes with a USB-C input cable, and the junction of the cable and the charging board is treated with anti-bending. The bottom and edges of the charging board are designed with aluminum alloy shell; the top surface is made of plastic board, the surface is smooth and has a skin-like feel. The measured cable length is about 1 meter, the diameter of the charging board is 55.86mm, thickness is 5.28mm.

Blow it down with a hot air gun, we can judge it to be TPS61178 through the package. The boost converter boosts the input to the wireless charging power level. It is speculated that Apple’s 15W wireless charging rises high voltage based on the 7.5W wireless charging. High transmission power, internal charge pump step-down charging.

The Schottky diode next to it comes from ON Semiconductor, NSR20F30NXT5G, which is used to improve conversion efficiency..There is a 3.3μH alloy inductor on the other side for boosting. The components on the USB header circuit board play a boosting role. The end of the input cable has made such a complicated design, which shows that this product is not ordinary.

Summary of disassembly

The packaging of Apple MagSafe magnetic wireless charger is all paper-based, which is a good embodiment of Apple's environmental protection actions. The wireless charger comes with a USB-C input cable, the body adopts a disc shape design, an aluminum alloy shell, and the whole is small and exquisite. Magnetic suction and MagSafe wireless charging are its two core points, automatic adsorption alignment and 15W wireless charging, which can be used while charging, allowing users to get a new experience in wireless charging. Apple’s efforts in wireless charging have a huge impact on the entire wireless charging market, and it is worth looking forward to in the future.

Through disassembly, the charging head network learned that a very complicated boost circuit is designed inside the USB-C cable head alone. The interface controller uses Cypress CYPD2104 and Texas Instruments TPS61178 is used for boosting and increasing transmission power. The wireless charging board is equipped with TI TMP302 for over-temperature protection, and the MPS step-down IC is used to power the STMicroelectronics wireless charging main control chip STM32F446MEY6. The wireless charging controller is also customized to ST. In addition, the workmanship of the product from the cable to the charging board is quite good. The inside of the thread is protected by steel sleeve spot welding. The magnet ring and PCB board inside the charging board are fixed with glue. The PCB board is equipped with a shielding cover.

The global shipments of iPhone 12 are obvious to all. As the most perfect wireless charger for iPhone 12, its suppliers STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments will benefit a lot.
