Organizational culture is the blend of shared assumptions, values, and beliefs that shape how people think, feel, and act in a workplace. It sets the tone for acceptable behaviors and norms. But where does culture come from? In large part, it stems from leadership.
Leaders play a pivotal role in establishing and reinforcing organizational culture through their behaviors, communication, policies, and processes. There are several key ways leaders directly impact culture:
Role modeling - Employees observe leaders' behaviors and follow suit. A leader who embraces transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct sets the stage for an open and upright culture.
As Gandhi said,
"Be the change you wish to see in the world."
Communication - The language leaders use, how they frame things, what they talk about, and what they leave unsaid send signals about cultural values. Clear, compassionate, and frequent communication from leaders fosters trust and openness.
Decision-making - The criteria leaders use for decisions reveal what matters most in the organization. Data-driven leaders shape analytical cultures, while customer-focused leaders shape service cultures.
Hiring practices - Who leaders attract, select, and retain dictates organizational composition and influences norms. Hiring for culture fit maintains the status quo, while hiring for diversity shifts the culture.
Performance management - What behaviors leaders praise, criticize, and reward motivate cultural aspects. Recognizing collaboration shapes cooperative cultures. Rewarding innovation spurs innovative cultures.
Accountability - Enforcing stated values through rewards and discipline reinforces culture. Lack of accountability undermines desired cultural elements.
In essence, organizational culture flows from the top down. To shape cultural aspirations like integrity, accountability, creativity, or customer centricity, leaders must actively model and nurture those elements.
