How does ISO 22000 differ from other food safety standards like HACCP?

These two titles are important to protect the safety of food — which is an unrefutable BUT; their scope, application and structure varies distinctly.ISO 22000 Vs HACCP

1. Scope and Applicability:

HACCP: HACCP is a systematic preventive approach to food safety. These are a correct standard focusing on hazard in specific area of the food chain. It is commonly used in food safety programs and can be incorporated at different stages of producing food, from sourcing raw materials to finished products.

— ISO 22000: A food safety management standard along the entire value creation chain that integrates also additional requirements by covering generally all HACCP-principles as well. The scheme includes the whole food chain and aims to keep every step, from farm to fork, safe.

2. Structure and Requirements:

HACCP — HAZARD ANALYSIS & CRITICAL CONTROL POINTS: This is build on seven principles 1) Hazard analysis, defined as the process of collecting and evaluating informations to determine if there may be a hazard.

(2) Determine critical control points (CCP): A point, step or procedure at which controls can prevent, eliminate or reduce food safety hazards.

(3 )Establishing critical limits; Critical limit are values used to distinguish acceptable from non-accepted risks. It's really more of a pragmatic paradigm or bunch of protocols.

– ISO 22000: It is the certification that joins HACCP principles in a larger management system framework. It provides the requirements for a food safety management system (FSMS) where an organization needs to build up its own particular arrangement of sustenance wellbeing approach, assign parts and obligation in addition to have satisfactory interchanges set up. ISO 22000 certification in UAE integrates other management standards like the ISO 9001 as well, making it a top-grade comprehensive standard.

3. Focus:

- HACCP: Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points—mostly involves identifying and controlling hazards during the production process.

- ISO 22000: Is based on a preventive and comprehensive management system that ensures food security throughout the supply chain. This deals not only with hazard control but also takes into account organizational elements such as leadership, resource management and continuous improvement.

4. Certification & Integration:

- HACCP: This certification standard can be part of many foodsafety programs and may also have limited consideration by some regulations or accredidations but it is not a single type of certifiationalone.

- ISO 22000 -International standard with formal certification available. It is intended that an organization can adapt it to its own management system, regardless of the stage at which preparations are already advanced for ISO 9000.

So, in simple words if we layout ISO 22000 certification is a standard whereas HACCP is just the methodology to control hazards. It can provide a complete management system for food safety that is harmonized with other established management systems and standards such as ISO 9001.
