How Does the Eudaimonia Machine Concept Help Achieve a Productive Workplace Design?

Workplace design has always been a topic of interest in the corporate realm.

Over the years, people from various schools of thought have put forth their ideas about how a workplace should look and feel. Whether it is the endless row of cubicles or the generosity of open floor plans- workspaces have tremendously evolved in the last few decades. One such office design concept that has long been understated but is now gaining prominence is the Eudaimonia Machine.?

Coined by the ancient Greek philosopher, scientist, and mathematician, Aristotle, the concept of “eudaimonia” means attaining the epitome of human capability. Through centuries, this idea has permeated into various spheres of life, enabling people to be the best version of themselves. When applied to office design, this ideology focuses on creating workspaces that allow people to achieve their highest state of productivity.?

How Can the Concept of Eudaimonia Machine Revolutionise Workplaces?

Picture this: You are walking into an open-plan office with a bustling environment. As you settle into your desk, on one end you can hear a person gossiping about some employee and on the other end, you can listen to a team brainstorming out loud. Now all you wanted was to avoid distractions, sit down in a soundproof room, and peacefully work on your project.

This is exactly where the concept of The Eudaimonia Machine steps in as your saviour. So the idea of the Eudaimonia Machine in workplace design was introduced by the American architect David Dewane in writer Cal Newport’s book titled Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World. It establishes that every activity needs a specific environment to be performed efficiently.?

For this purpose, a typical office layout is bifurcated into five broad zones namely; the gallery, the salon, the library, the office and the chamber. Each of these zones is curated in a fashion to stimulate a unique mental response from employees. Every zone fluidly connects with the other allowing for a seamless transition of spaces within the office.?

Let’s have a look at what purpose each of the five zones serves:?

  • The Gallery

This is like the first impression of the company. It's meant to be an inviting space that inspires everyone who comes in, whether they're visitors or employees.

  • The Salon

Think of it as a place to connect with your coworkers over a cup of coffee. It's an informal space for collaboration, which is just as important as doing focused work.

  • The Library

This area serves as a buffer between the busy Salon and a more focused environment. In the Library, you can find books and materials to help with your work.

  • The Office

This is where teams can do lighter admin tasks like paperwork and emails. It's the most regular and traditional work area among all the zones.

  • The Chamber

This is your sacred space for deep, focussed, and uninterrupted work. It's a quiet zone where you can concentrate for hours.?
