“How does Digital Pedagogy fit into the ADDIE Instructional Design Model?

The ADDIE model is one of the most commonly used models used by instructional designers and provides rich opportunities to integrate digital pedagogy within it’s processes. The ADDIE instructional design model is aimed at providing an iterative approach to instructional design focusing on four major development phases of?Analysis, Design, Development,Implementation and Evaluation. Each of these phases is completed with specific goals and tasks in mind but also leaves room for continuous updates to support changes and feedback from the course development. To learn more about the processes of the ADDIE model itself watch the video?linked here at 17 seconds in.

Why is Digital Pedagogy important within the ADDIE instructional design model?

The ADDIE model was developed prior to the onset of online and hybrid teaching methodologies that utilize digital pedagogies and tools so it begs to ask the question “How does digital pedagogy fit into this instructional design model? I have identified three themes with examples that can be consistently and thoughtfully included with the phases of this model to best support the integration of Digital Pedagogy in the ADDIE model.

Identified Themes of Digital Pedagogy

Thoughtful approaches to instruction and pedagogy utilizing digital tools & resources. Shifting existing practice from traditional to one supported by digital methods.

  • Shift in person lectures to videos and answering student questions to the content in person.
  • Utilizing Digital Libraries and Digital Formative and Summative Assessments to support specific scaffolded learning and content.

The use of digital tools and resources to transform or modify instruction to produce new learning and outcomes. Instruction is modified and accommodates or uses digital resources to support new learning or build upon existing understandings.

  • Providing students with digital creation tools create multimedia and representations of learning.
  • Modifying projects to support students to use digital tools more effectively and share their skills.

Teaching & instructional Strategies are supported by the use of technology or digital resources to enhance the student learning experience and provide data to support learning.

  • The digital component of instruction provides data, enhanced experiences or new skills to support the educator and student.
  • Students and Instructors have data to support next level instructional strategies and support.
  • Students can track their progress and instructors can identify learning data to support targeted instruction.

Integrating Digital Pedagogy Themes Into ADDIE

Within each phase of ADDIE is a unique opportunity to integrate digital pedagogy into the course development. Central elements that digital technologies have enabled include an ability to transform classroom learning environments, virtual engagment, student learning data to support learning path and the identification of the most appropriate digital tools and platforms. Identified below are several potential integrations of difgital pedagogy into each phase of the ADDIE model.

Analysis Phase

  • Utilize existing data to support course development. Recognize trends and potential course needs.
  • Identify digital delivery platforms and tools to support learners.
  • Identify essential technologies that need to be equitably implemented for learners.

Design Phase

  • Identify digital platforms which best support the digital assessments, multimedia and key data collection points to support course design.
  • Identify potential gamification strategies, media resources and digital tools which support student expression of understanding.
  • Identify specific digital skills and competencies student will need to support their expression of learning.
  • Utilize digital tools to create the digital content and planning resources to support the course development.

Development Phase

  • Integrate the necessary technologies to support student and instructor success. Develop a basic learning frameworks of skills to support learning.
  • Designers can utilize digital storyboards and multimedia resources to support learning paths.
  • Test digital technologies and be sure they support the course development and anticipated student experience.

Implementation Phase

  • Providing technical supports and tutorials to support potential growth or gap areas with course implementation.
  • Collect real time digital feedback from the course implementation allowing instructors and students to provide feedback.

Evaluation Phase

  • Utilize real time analytics available within platforms to review key points of student engagement.
  • Review digital products, resources and student learning outcomes to assist in reviewing course effectiveness.

Why Digital Pedagogy Matters

Its important in the develpment of course content to understand why digital pedagogies are important to instructional design practice. The most critical in my experience are the empowering data collection within the learning environment and identifying how potential technology instructional practices support learner outcomes.

Course structure should support the instructor & student experience and integrate the necessary technologies to support student and educator digital learning skills and accessability needs. Having a concrete vision for digital pedagogies within course design make it possible to have available data and digital resources reviewed and implmented for maximum effectiveness.
