How Does a Construction Project Manager Differ from a General Contractor?

In the construction sector, project completion is always the goal, but accomplishing so efficiently and promptly can be challenging. You can consider hiring a general contractor or project manager to oversee the completion of your project. Understanding the distinction between these two individuals may be challenging for those not involved in the construction sector. Choosing one of them, however, will result in different results at the end of the project.

Most of the distinctions concern the roles that the construction manager and the contractor perform in due process.

Operational Levels

While the manager and the contractor have responsibilities, they are at different levels of management. Project managers, for example, often carry out their obligations at a higher level, guaranteeing coordination and communication among the many bodies involved in the process.

However, contractors work at a lower level, where they must manage the process among employees, subcontractors, and other people under their supervision.

Tasks

Another contrast is the nature of their work. On the one hand, project managers perform the duties of a supervisor. They collaborate with the customer to guarantee that the work is completed following the client's objectives. They are also accountable for finishing the work on schedule and within budget.

On the other hand, contractors usually deal with heavy machinery, resources, and supplies, as well as their subordinates, ensuring that all physical work on the project is exact and on time.

Complexity

Finally, general contractors and project managers are similar in that they must interpret and carry out the client's desires. This, however, heavily depends on the magnitude and intricacy of the construction project. For larger projects, the project manager coordinates the many entities engaged in the project, such as the designer, client, contractor, and subcontractor.` The general contractor may be the primary point of contact with the client on smaller or less complex building projects.

An experienced and qualified project manager will be aware of the risks associated with the process, allowing them to identify potential dangers and attempt to avoid them without sacrificing time or money.
