HOW DOES A CHILD LEARN TO READ WORDS BY SIGHT?

Our brain will best remember what we experience with multiple senses. This is important to remember as we begin to teach our child to read. Seeing words in print as you point to each word you read, hearing words read aloud as you point to each word in print, and having your child speaking the words in print as young readers recognize them will help a child to recognize, learn and remember common sight words.

Listening to what ‘good’ reading sounds like is important for a child. Pointing to words as you read helps your child to understand how words work in a story. Books are fun! Seeing and hearing how books work is a priceless experience for young readers.

As you and your child select books for your story time, think about including one short, easy-to-read book along with your favorite storybooks. Books specifically designed for your child to see, hear, and say sight words can provide your child with the opportunity to explicitly experience sight words in print and make sight word practice easy and fun.

Check out www.readysetgoread.com for books designed specifically to support young readers as they learn how to read sight words in text and each word individually in word practice.
