How Does Casing Soil Determines Watering of Button Mushrooms?

When growing, champignons watering is determined by number of aspects.

Firstly the compost:

  • initial moisture content
  • temperature
  • compost activity.

As well the casing soil. What qualities of the casing soil influence how to organize watering?

Usually mushroom farms in the world which we consult use casing of Dutch suppliers - as Legro or Kekkil?-BVB . As well in Poland from Wokas Spó?ka Akcyjna Firma . There are producers in other countries as well (which also export out of the country) - for example Theriault & Hachey Peat Moss Ltd. in Canada Harte Peat Ltd in Ireland or AB REKYVA in Lithuania. Some farms can produce casing for themselves - as Monaghan Mushrooms or Baltic Champs .

Qualities of Mushroom Casing Soil to Consider while Doing Mushroom Watering:

1?? Composition of the casing soil (how quickly and how much water it can absorb)

2?? Initial moisture content (dry casing soil for mushroom cultivation requires time and small doses of water)

3?? Structure of casing soil (how resistant it is to washing out during watering mushrooms)

4?? Water retention capacity (how much water it can hold)

5?? Casing soil temperature (in colder seasons), watering of mushrooms should start when the casing soil temperature is not below 15°C.

Additionally - another important indicator is ash content. If it is high (40-50%), such casing soil will also absorb water poorly and will resemble a swamp in structure.

It is crucial for the technologist to monitor the quality of the casing soil from the very beginning.

Remember that on casing soil with low water retention capacity and high ash content, large waterings cannot be applied.

If you need to apply 2 liters per square meter, divide the watering into smaller portions, for example, 0.5 liters each time.

Carefully observe what happens after each application before continuing.
