How does the ball know?

Before I get into this article, EC had another fantastic National Event yesterday and it had me wondering - how many people will follow through with the conversations and leads they had?
It's a remarkable opportunity for entrepreneurs at our National Events as they get the chance to be in a room full of like minded people, which offers them a chance for significant business growth!
Anyway, back to it... at the weekend I played golf with Fabian, my 11 year old son.
Mini golf, that is, at this fantastic American-style course just a mile or so from our home.
Fabian developed a rather unusual stroke whereby he was 'punching' the ball. In other words, his club was being forced into the ground immediately behind the ball.
He had no follow through - and his balls were going in all directions.
As a golfer of much enthusiasm (albeit little talent!), I do know the importance of follow through - and the difference it makes.
In golf, your follow through changes everything.
I tried to explain this to Fabian.
"But how does the ball know?" he asked.
And, of course, he's right. The ball is long gone by the time you're finished with your swing - even on a mini golf course.
But here's the thing, in order to NOT follow through, you need to start slowing down before you've hit the ball.
The follow through isn't the goal, but it is a symptom that you did something right.
And even on a mini golf course, once Fabian started following through properly, his score started to markedly improve.
I was struck by the almost perfect analogy to so many of our businesses.
Whether it's customer service that you provide, or the way you engage with new prospects, if you begin slowing down before the last moment, then the last moment is going to suffer.
You think you need more leads. More balls to hit.
Not true.
All the customers, and all the revenue you need are there waiting for you if you just follow through better.
See. Perfect analogy.
Have a great week,
Nigel.
