How to do Your Great Work
People often ask, “What is my great work?” If you do the work in front of you greatly, it will lead you to your great work.
This is a good time of the year to begin. After the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, the light power begins to ascend again. Nature is on your side. Spring is approaching and it points to a time of joyous, hopeful progress.
But we must work with determination and perseverance to make full use of the propitiousness of the time.
The easiest way to find and do your great work is to do your dharma. In Sanskrit, dharma loosely means “to do the right thing.”
Dharma is about living the life you were meant to live. It can be as simple as not comparing yourself to the person next to you.
One of the most influential treatises in eastern philosophy, the Bhagavad Gita says, “It is better to do your own dharma even imperfectly, than someone else’s dharma perfectly.”
For instance, an actor on a stage must play her own part, not someone else’s part.
In the same way, in your career and your life, when you are the leader, be the leader. When you are a parent, be the parent. If you open your arms and embrace your current fate, you’ll gain the strength and courage that you need for what lies ahead.

Through dharma (doing the right thing) the weak can overcome the strong.
This is illustrated beautifully by the Bible story of David and Goliath. A small boy defeats a larger, stronger, gigantic opponent because he does the right thing.
Yogis believe that when you do the right thing, dharma protects. When you don’t, dharma destroys. Even though Goliath had all the brute force he needed, he was not doing the right thing. David, a small boy with a sling shot, destroyed him.

1 年Love this Shar! Doing the right thing, enlivens the soul with energy and freedom. I feel my joy expands so much inside when no one else knows. Like donating to a fundraiser anonymously, and there is also much joy when giving my name. Or, helping older people at the grocery store out to their car. I love how it creates a warmth in both our hearts. When helping people to learn software with patience, and a lightbulb goes off for them and they are more empowered. Our dharma to do the right thing returns like a wave over and over as our opportunities simple or complex. ?? Love this subject. Thank you!

1 年I truly enjoyed reading this unexpectedly deep post Shar. This struck me right away: “It is better to do your own dharma even imperfectly, than someone else’s dharma perfectly.” Another way to put it is "done is better than perfect" and those words are still ringing in my ears from my first coach years ago. Well done!

1 年This is such a common sense approach to work (and life) Shar McBee. And the interesting thing I've observed about common sense is that it's so uncommon. Doing the right thing I've found will never lead to failure.
