This week our Design Consultant, Charlotte Wright , shares her thoughts about the use of white in interiors, the impact it has on décor, and how to play with it.
1. Can different shades of white be combined?
Absolutely! Combining shades of white adds depth and avoids a flat, clinical look. “You can layer whites, like warm tones with off-whites, to create softness,” explains Charlotte. A Scandinavian-inspired approach often mixes whites with natural textures like oak or linen, resulting in a timeless yet modern style. Pairing different finishes, such as matte walls with gloss accents, can also enhance the contrast and visual interest.??
2. How does light affect the use of white?
Light plays a crucial role in how white appears. South-facing rooms, filled with warm natural light, complement creamy whites, while north-facing spaces benefit from cooler whites to brighten darker areas. Charlotte advises, “Test whites in different lights during the day to see how they interact with the space.” In very bright rooms, cooler tones can help balance the intensity of light without feeling too stark.?
3. How can white be used beyond walls and ceilings?
White isn’t just for walls—it’s also ideal for furniture and accents. Kitchens and bathrooms often feature white elements, such as cabinetry, islands, or even sanitaryware. “A white kitchen can be paired with textured oak or even metallic finishes like stainless steel for a modern touch,” Charlotte notes. Adding white furniture, like chairs or shelving, helps maintain a cohesive look without overwhelming the space.?
4. What are ways to add structural details or texture to white spaces?
Charlotte suggests incorporating texture and materials to break up the monotony of white. “Think wood, fur, or even plants with white accents”. Features like wall panelling, matte finishes, or textured walls can also add dimension. Adding metallics, such as brushed steel or brass, brings another layer of contrast while keeping the space fresh and dynamic.?
5. Are monochrome rooms still a thing?
Monochrome remains a stylish choice when done thoughtfully. “All-white kitchens or bathrooms can look stunning, but it’s important to add details like aluminium or accent walls to avoid a washed-out look,” explains Charlotte. Pairing white with darker tones, like steely blues or greys, creates balance while maintaining a clean aesthetic.?

6. What effects does white have on a space and mood?
White creates a light and airy feel, making spaces appear larger and more open. “It’s timeless and seasonal—you can refresh it year-round with flowers or accents,” says Charlotte. White also gives a sense of cleanliness and order, ideal for clients who value simplicity. However, too much white can feel sterile if not balanced with texture or colour.?
7. Which rooms are best suited for white?
Kitchens and bathrooms are classic white choices because they emphasise cleanliness and light. Larger rooms benefit from white’s ability to open the space, while smaller rooms can use white to feel less confined. “Matte white finishes on baths or tiles can add subtle interest, keeping things sleek yet inviting,” Charlotte shares.?
8. Are there any negatives to using white?
Overusing white can result in a clinical or flat look if not balanced with other elements. “A fully white room can feel washed out without texture or accents,” warns Charlotte. Fingerprints and dirt may show more easily, but as another points out, “At least you can see where to clean!” The key is to pair white with complementary textures, finishes, or colours to ensure the space feels welcoming and layered.
