How Do You Show Staff You Value Them?
This post came about after a discussion on the train with businessman Robert Shaw who I met on the way home from a gig.
The goal: Show staff you care.
The Method: Traditionally the answer is a party, or team event like bowling.... but it's actually increasingly hard. Not everyone drinks, not everyone wants to dance, some people want to network and others want to avoid talking business like the plague. For some free drink and a meal will lose to staying at home watching the telly. Even bowling is fun but not particulary memorable.
The Solution: After seeing my magic Rob suggested that a skilled and amusing magician is an excellent way to solve these issues and having just come from entertaining a group of lawyers and their clients I agree. But why?
A magician is inherently special. It's not something you see every day, it's not something that's easy to afford on your own (unlike bowling), it's memorable, different and fun. For those who are a bit introverted it brings them out of their shell. It's roving, it's flexible, it's the ultimate icebreaker. It adapts to the people who want to see it and the people who don't (there's very few of these.... and usually they change their minds once they see everyone else enjoying it).
It Ticks The Boxes: Memorable, engaging, brings the team together and rewards your staff showing that you care. People will talk about the fun time they had at your party for days after the event.
