How do you recognize those that paved the way?

How do you recognize those that paved the way?

You honor them.?Our world, our society, our communities were built by someone.?People with ideas, passion, and a commitment to shape the future.

In the past month, I had the privilege of working on a project to establish a Wall of Honor in our Jacobs Headquarters.?This wall presents a virtual display of our Jacobs Hall of Fame, individuals (Dr. Joseph Jacobs, Noel Watson, Gary Mandel and Linda Fayne Levinson) who have left an indelible mark on society and our organization.?

What struck me about this exercise was not so much the incredible things these individuals accomplished but more the consistency in who they were.?There was a common theme of deeply held values that ran through all these great leaders.?Having clarity over what they stood for, preceded, or maybe drove their success.?Their beliefs transcended their accolades, accomplishments, and milestones and helped them create something larger than themselves.?

It made me ask:?Do I have this clarity??Do I know what I value??If someone created a visual display for my career, what would it say?

I’d want it to start with gratitude. Being grateful for having an opportunity to make a difference has always given me strength.?Following that, I would want it to read kindness and integrity.?There is something fundamental that comes from operating from a place of respect that builds a foundation stronger than any concrete or brick.?I would also want it to list joy. Life is not a straight path, and it will certainly throw challenges and curve balls, but we have the choice to find the joy in the work we do and the interactions we have.?Lastly, I’d like it to say that I helped others shine.?There is nothing more thrilling for me than to figure out how to bring out the best in a team or group of people.

I don’t know if our Jacobs’ Hall of Famers were conscious of the values that drove them, but I sure do appreciate how clear it is when you read through their history.?

If you are like me and are somewhere along your professional journey, I invite you to join me in exploring what’s most important to you.?Take a moment to reflect and connect with what you value.?I’d love to hear what your wall of honor would say.
