The simple answer to the above question is this; you don't! If a client is unwilling to be in this process, unwilling to do the work needed, unwilling to change perceptions and beliefs; then they are wasting their time and yours.
UNLESS you can find out why they are so resistant to either the coaching, or the topic, or the situation which needs to be resolved. You may find a base to work with when you uncover the answers to these questions.
HOW do you get them to open up? By showing them that you are on their side, that the coaching space is safe and confidential, and by building rapport and trust with them. And the way to do this is through active listening and authentic conversation. By showing your client that you are really curious to find out more about them and their situation. To value them as people without judging them. To make them feel heard and held.
Any other suggestions?
