How do you Nurture Leaders?

In leadership circles , the nature vs. nurture debate questions whether leaders are born with inherent traits or if they can be developed through experience. While opinions differ, this article highlights the belief that leaders are made not born.

Leadership Development is a skill that can be honed, as experts emphasize despite arguments for innate qualities. Privately held firms, with limited resources and close-knit environments, offer fertile ground for leaders to emerge.

Nurturing Competencies Small to mid-size firms provide unique opportunities for aspiring leaders to gain hands-on experience and develop crucial competencies such as effective communication, decision-making, adaptability, and resilience.

Learning from Experience shapes leaders, as they are involved in various business aspects in dynamic firms. Exposure to different functions and challenges offers valuable lessons, and mistakes and failures become stepping stones to success.

Continual Learning and Adaptation Leaders in these firms understand the importance of continuous learning. They seek mentors, invest in development programs, and stay updated with industry trends, fostering a culture of learning within the organization.

The prevailing belief is that leaders are made, not solely born with innate traits.

Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, is a renowned figure in the business world. He has been asked about developing leaders frequently.

Some of his remarks include:

"Great leaders are made, they are not born.

They're made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile."

Plus he claims "The more you learn, the more you'll earn."

And on selecting leaders he claims "In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you."

So where do you fall on the debate between Nature vs Nurture?

Great article Steve - Developing the human system is just as important as developing the technical and operating systems. I'd propose this means understanding both nature (how your brain is wired) and nurture (how your mind is programed).

There is alot of wisdom in this article, Steve Brody. I believe the great football coach, Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers also said along the same lines, "Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price that all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile."

Like many, my answer is that leadership is a function of both "Nature and Nurture." Some step into leadership roles easily, while others become leaders when the situation requires direction. However, as someone else once said, the most important rule of leadership is that "...everything is your fault."

Steve Brody that Warren Buffett quote is killer; integrity is a deal breaker. Not everyone is cut out or wants to be a leader. The more leadership development opportunities we can make available to our teams the better.
