How Do You Measure Success in Med Tech?
Ashley McEvoy
Former EVP & Worldwide Chair, J&J MedTech. Healthcare Investor and Board Director.
Boston was buzzing with more than 3,000 med tech colleagues at AdvaMed’s annual MedTech Conference. In a city with a rich history of many firsts in healthcare, it was the perfect place to talk about the latest in med tech innovation and the future of the industry.
We’re at an unprecedented time where advances in technology, data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning are revolutionizing care in exciting ways, allowing for earlier and less invasive interventions. At the same time, our industry faces many challenges and pressures as the healthcare landscape continues to shift and evolve at a rapid pace. It’s easy to lose sight of the human side of healthcare and how we impact people’s lives in a personal and profound way.
During the conference, our J&J team was proud to invite George Mink to the patient pavilion to tell his story. George is a martial arts instructor and Navy veteran who prides himself on his active lifestyle. After three decades of living with discomfort and stiffness in his knees, the pain became unbearable and he was forced to give up his favorite activities such as running and biking. As someone who is personally committed to health and fitness, I can imagine how difficult it was for him to stop doing the things that gave him energy and purpose. George decided to have a double knee replacement with our ATTUNE? Knee, and happily shared that today he is free of pain and once again competing in triathlons.
When I heard this story, I was reminded of how fortunate we are to have the trust and confidence of people when they are at their most vulnerable moments. What we do matters. We save lives. We improve the quality of people’s lives so they can do more of the things they love, with the people they love.
Med tech is an unbelievably honorable industry and our success is measured in the patients we reach and the lives we save and improve. That’s why it’s our privilege and obligation to continuously push the boundaries of what’s possible in healthcare so we can help more patients get better and back to fully living their lives.
