How do you measure success?
I studied at a boarding school in Kuala Kangsar. Once in a while, when it was a short public holiday, I decided to just follow my friend to go back to his hometown in Ipoh, because mine was a bit far away to the east coast.
Plenty of good food, lot of guitar plays and it was a happy home. On the last day before my friend and I got to go back to school, he invited me to meet his grandmother.?
Well, I thought there would be more good food, so I went. We talked to her and shared our experience at school for about half an hour.
Then, when we were about to leave, we asked her permission and I shook and kissed her hand.?
This was when I finally got my good food, for thought, when she said slowly;
“Son, when you grow up, remember this. Successful person is not necessarily a useful person. But, a useful person is surely a successful person.”?
It rings until today. I am blessed and grateful for that moment. That piece of advice has helped to shape my perspective about success and service.
If you ask me how to measure success, I tend to think,?
“The more useful we are,
the more successful we are.”
It also shows that success is not about how high or how many titles that we have, but how we use those ‘titles’ to be more useful to serve others.
Be it the professional title or ‘home’ title, I think we can be more truly successful by being more effectively useful.
So, how do you measure success?
