This Box boat is made of paulownia: The 16 foot long boat was made with laminated wood panels from paulownia, also known also known as Kiri or bluebell tree.
Built by Dieter Schulz-Hoos from Munich designed this boats with construction technology he derived from his years of designing ultra light aircraft.
When asked why he is building with paulownia wood lumber "Kiri" Mr Schulz-Hoos had this to say.
"Because this type of wood hardly absorbs any water. Kiri wood swells and shrinks less than teak, and it is extremely resistant to fungi. It is very inexpensive and weighs half as much as conventional boat building timber."
