How do you know if those in your network are the right people

I am often asked about how to build the right network. The question often starts with “how do I network’ or “where should I network” and I wrote an article recently on how to assess the right networking group for you – here it is.

Professional networking is so much more than simply finding and participating in the right networking groups – it’s a good place to start, but it’s not the final solution.

Much like the famous quote by Jim Rohn – “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”, and in fact, the key to building a successful business – see what Packard’s Law says about that. Building a productive network starts with having the right people around you.

Here are my two golden rules to discover who are the right people to have in your network

1.????You can share bad news and they will just listen. They won’t judge you or try to fix you or tell you why they had the same experience and it was worse. Most importantly, you won’t feel shame or guilt for sharing a failure.

2.????You can share good news and they will help you celebrate. They won’t make you feel guilty for your success, they won’t congratulate you publicly on social media whilst secretly wishing it was them. They won’t immediately tell you about their success or the success of someone else they know.

You want to be around people that want the best for you. Those that encourage success in others, not those who want to piggyback your success to be successful themselves.

It’s acceptable and desirable to surround yourself with people who are facilitating your development. They listen and cooperate with you and move towards a better future.

If they don’t pay any attention and they keep doing the same things over and over again, they are not going anywhere and it’s beginning to get painful, then it’s time for you to move on. They may be lovely people but they are limiting your success with their own apathy.

You have the right and responsibility to surround yourself with people who are good for the best part of you. Remember that when aligning yourself with those that are invested in your future.

Together with the article, I wrote about finding the right professional networking groups, you now also have a way to be around the right people.
