How do you Handle Negative Emotions?

How do you Handle Negative Emotions?

#suicide #depression #failure #matterOFtime #everythingwillpass

Making his debut in Test Cricket, he scored a ZERO in his first innings….and again, zero in his second innings….yes, I am talking about Marvan Atapattu – Sri Lankan Player.

BCC-SL dropped him. So he went back to the nets for more practice. Played more first-class cricket and scored more runs. He was waiting for that elusive call.

And after another twenty-one months, he got his second chance.

This time he was optimistic, all prepared, and determined …… afterall he practices a lot. And this time his scores: 0 in the first innings, 1 in the second….. dropped again from the team; he went back to the grind and scored a mountain of runs in first-class cricket.

Well, seventeen months later, opportunity knocked yet again – i.e third time. Marvan got to bat in both innings of the Test. His scores: 0 and 0. Hhuusshhh!!

Back to practice. Just imagine his state of mind at this stage. This time he must have been surrounded by uncertainties ….. …would the selectors ever give him another chance? Most of the selectors agreed that he was unfit for big game and lacked big-match temperament….and kept him ignoring.

His technique wasn’t good enough at the highest level…… however, Marvan kept trying.

Three years later, he got another chance. This time, he made runs. He came good…. and in an illustrious career after that, Marvan went on to score over 5000 runs for Sri Lanka. That included *sixteen centuries* and *six double hundreds*.

He became captain of his team. All this despite taking over six years to score his second run in Test cricket. I wonder how he managed his anxiety….uncertainty …..fears and other negative emotions

It is important that we ask ourselves : how many of us have the software to handle failure like Marvan? Six years of trying and failing. He must have been tempted to pursue another career. He could have immediately moved to take some job and start his career or change his sport…or simply do nothing. But he didn’t……We all should appreciate that in real life, resilience is the most significant competence that will help an individual to deal with surrounding and moments of difficulties in the VUCA world.

The next time you are passing through a rough patch or rejection, think of Marvan. He will undoubtedly inspire you!! Stay Blessed…..Stay Happy!!

**Sushant Singh Rajput's suicide yesterday has force all of us to think about - What happiness is? Do publicity….money ….material possessions bring joy in life? How does one deal with failure? How long should one continue to struggle in life? - Maybe you will find an answer to some of these questions in Marvan’s story.
