How do you go from being a word class doctor to being a world class retired doctor?

How do you go from being a word class doctor to being a world class retired doctor?

Is there something you want very badly? Something that will help you transition from your current role in society and your current life to a new dream?

You are a physician leader and a caregiver, you are someone who is loved by patients and families for your positive impact on their lives, how do you move on from this amazing and privileged role? How will you define yourself once you are on the other side?

Most physicians plan to retire around age 60 (Collier, CMAJ. Jan 2017) but end up waiting until the end of that decade and beyond. The reasons are varied, some docs love what they are doing so much that being a caregiver is the only life they desire; others would love to retire but cannot afford it for financial reasons.

There are doctors who feel burned out, tired and who have lost their love for the art of medicine but who failed to plan for the questions above. They are taking the easy way out; continuing to suffer through the hated daily routine. It is the simple choice in the short term, but failure to hang the stethoscope when the time is right can have bad consequences for patients and society and will compound their frustrations.

There is yet another group. There are doctors who have cultivated interests and passions throughout their professional lives. I am not talking about hobbies, I am talking about cultivating the values and visions that will connect you to the people and projects that define your new life. I would love to be one of those doctors when the time is right.

I always loved to travel the world looking for adventures and freedom, to learn about different cultures, to explore the natural beauties of this great planet of ours; shall I take a chance by leaving the comfort of a wonderful job in a superb organization to embrace unfamiliarity in this time of uncertainty and fear, and seek a new life in Harbors Unknonw?

What do you think?

I completely believe you are on the correct path. This is a door that needs to be explored. I cannot help but know you will always be an asset to all living things that come your way. Following your heart does not mean you have abandoned people, you are merely following a new path. Peace be you.

Go for it! No better time than now. Nevertheless you will certainly be missed. You are one of a kind and I think you should just go out and explore.
