How do you find a Marketer you can trust?

I don’t know about you, but I have become very annoyed, somewhat really p***ed off with Marketers.?


And I am one.? Zingify offers Marketing Services.


Even from being in Marketing for a long time, I know that our business needs a team of Marketing experts and I can’t do it on my own.?


Over the last 5 years I have noticed Marketing change significantly. ? Most people are now on smart phones so social media marketing is very important.


Over the last 10 years, website SEO has had to be a main feature of your business.?


And now, the coaching and online consulting boom has seen (unverified numbers but my observation) of millions of coaches and experts telling you they have the answer to all your lead generation woes.


You know you need Marketing Experts - but who do you trust?


We have spent over $100K with Marketing Agencies and definitely come out very disappointed.?


So here I am writing this post because if I feel this way - no doubt others do.??


I am going to say something VERY controversial:


Most Marketing companies, maybe knowingly or maybe unknowingly ARE A SCAM.


And by scam I mean, companies that know how to market can sell easily to people. ? BUT my observation is that what is being offered doesn’t get to or can’t be delivered.???


If you have ever seen the documentary FYRE on Netflix, you will see a guy that set out with great intentions, high hopes and amazing marketing skills and had 10,000 people buy tickets to an event that never happened because he failed to execute. ? His high hopes, great intentions and amazing Marketing Skills got people to buy.? However he didn’t deliver, and never paid the money back.? Leaving loads of people in financial trouble.? That is what is seen as a SCAM.?


I could give you EXAMPLE after EXAMPLE of this with Marketing Offers and Agencies.


I am not saying that the pop-up of millions of Marketing Teams over the globe don’t have every intention of delivery. ? I am saying that most DON’T know how to execute.???


They may have high hopes, they may sound legit.? (In fact one was on stage with Gary V so I was very convinced).


What I am also saying is you HAVE to do some solid due diligence before you even think about saying yes.


Here is what you need to know about Marketing:

  • How you currently find clients and sell should be of key interest to your Marketing Expert.???Because if you have already sold a particular way and it has been successful, a Marketing Expert will look to automate and turn up what already works in your strategy.?

  • Marketing takes time to build and work - Your Marketer needs to be solid in Data-Driven Insight and Strategy.???There is no quick fix to generate leads. For every 1,000 people that see your business only about 1-2 of those people will be considering buying.? The cost of acquisition is high and marketing takes thinking and time.??Whilst they are dirty numbers my point is, your Marketer needs to care about numbers - know where your audience is, what they need to hear in their messaging AND THEN create an offer that really matters to your ideal clients or customers.? If they are not spending lots of time to understand this, test offers, learn from what works and doesn’t work in the data, then the marketing simply won’t work - EVER.?

  • Marketing should focus on ONE channel working and move to more channels later. You have so many things you should do in Marketing.? You need to have OMNI-Presence which means you need to be on every channel with the best content, ads and offers all day everyday. ? The biggest brands do this AND pour in MILLIONS of dollars in Marketing as well each year.????But you can’t start that way.? Spending a million dollars in Marketing without getting your foundations right will just waste your money.????There is no right way to start, but your Marketing Expert should be able to guide you through the roadmap of your Brand and Product growth.Develop clarity on your target audienceCreate Messaging that speaks to that audienceCreate Offers that your audience needTest those offers in that Market to see if it worksBuild on that insight - rework, redefine your audience, messaging and offers until something really STICKS - That is product-market fit.Then, dial up, spend more on what STICKS and works.?

  • Be very dubious of young dudes or chicks with Lambos, drinking cocktails on a beach telling you they can make you Millions. Maybe they did create a campaign that worked and made some great cash. BUT more probably, they are making millions of dollars promising to make you millions of dollars.? THEN when you buy they can’t execute and usually blame their customers for “not providing the graphics, videos and copy” SEEN THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.? Again, this is a SCAM (intentionally or unintentionally)?

  • Marketing requires an orchestra of expertise:

Graphic Design, Video Editor, Creative Director, Marketing Strategy, Campaign Management, Social Media Strategy?Just to name a few….        

  • No company can do it all without a significant amount of money invested in the team, so just know when you sign up to the Lambo dudes, you have to put in the expertise because they won’t.? Considering you are already busy, you will just not show up to training etc and nothing will happen. You will probably think it was you.?

  • Marketing will take over a year to work for you.? Even with a great team.?
  • That doesn’t mean you sit back and wait.? THIS IS YOUR BUSINESS. Be proactive, get involved, hold your team accountable.? Ensure they are booking and holding weekly or fortnightly progress meetings. ? BUT, the team will need to build a range of marketing assets which will take time. ? You need to really get that.


Here is what I recommend.

  • Be clear on your Marketing and Sales Goals
  • Never work with Lambo dudes or buy trainings you will never do
  • Find an agency that has all the expertise under one roof
  • Only continue to speak to agencies that get really clear about how you currently market and sell
  • Only speak to agencies that spend time understanding your business, audience, offers and products
  • Ensure they give you a list of clear outcomes and deliverables and a timeframe
  • Make sure that is a match for your goals
  • Request to speak to current customers to validate how they operate just like you would when you hire a candidate


It is YOUR responsibility to grow your business.? You are the CEO. Marketing is a service.?
