How do you describe Scrum?

While last week is was getting one post from linked In group. Which was, “What’s the best way to describe Scrum/Agile in the simplest terms to someone who knows nothing about it or is only familiar with Waterfall?”. After seeing this question, I myself thinking about the Scrum. After few days I’m getting some ideas. And know I’m sharing my ideas and thought about Scrum.

Generally, What is Scrum?

Normal meaning of the Scrum is, An ordered formation of players, used to restart play, in which the forwards of a team form up with arms interlocked and heads down, and push forward against a similar group from the opposing side. The ball is thrown into the scrum and the players try to gain possession of it by kicking it backwards towards their own side. (From Google Dictionary).

So scrum is a form of one game. After reading this I was wonder about, why they kept Scrum name to the one agile managing work framework. For getting answer for this question I learned lot about the scrum and I got some ideas. Here I’m going compare Scrum team and Football team.

The team strength for Scrum team is 8 to 10 members and for Football 11 members. For playing (or) implement Scrum framework, we need a team. The main goal of the Football is to win the match. For Scrum team goal is should deliver the incremental workable products with the high quality. After all this main important from both the Football and Scrum is Collaboration. For winning a game in the football all player should play in collaborative manner otherwise they loose the game. Likewise, in scrum all team members should work in a collaborative nature.

If one know about sports, they should know about the Scrum theory. Such as, Transparency, Self-organization, Time-Boxing, Collaboration and Adaption.

Transparency: Using score board all players in team should know about the current status about the game. Likewise, using kanban board very members in the team come know about status of the project.

Self-organization: While playing the game no one wait for instruction from coach or captain. Every one take the ownership of the game and react based on the situation. In scrum team, team members take the responsibilities and do their work without any wait commands from Product Owner or Manager.

Time-Boxing: Very game should complete within the time of period. If we take example for Football should complete within 90 Minutes of duration. As well as in the scrum one sprint should complete the 2 weeks or One month.

Collaboration: Like, How sports man play their games, for example in football each person will be assigned for a specific position but, when the critical time comes they may change their position they don't say I can play only this position or that because, all the players must have a common goal which is winning the game. Likewise all the teammates in the scrum should work in the collaborative manner and produce quality outcomes. Because, our common goal is we should deliver a Incremental working product with a high quality.

Adaption: All players in the team should adapt the new changes and environment, then only the survey with the competitor. In scrum what are the adjustment made by the inspector. The team should adapt the adjustment as soon as possible.
