How do you define yourself?

Do you think about work when you are not at work?
Do you bring up your career or your business within the first three minutes of any conversation?
When someone asks you - tell me about yourself, what is the first thing you say? Is it your work?
If you are an ambitious and an overly driven person, the chances of you identifying yourself as your-living-passion are almost 100%.
Have you ever thought about how much your work defines who you are?
The most popular surname in Germany and Switzerland is Müller, while in Ukraine, it’s Melnik; both are words for a miller. In Slovakia, the most common last name is Varga, a word that means cobbler. And in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US, it’s Smith – as in blacksmith, silversmith, locksmith, gunsmith. These names date back as far as the Middle Ages, when a person’s job was such a defining characteristic, it became their literal identity.*
In the early stages of my business and investment career, the only thing I was focused on was growing the business. I was consumed by my ambition and did not have any time, focus or interest for anything else.
I remember the day when a new acquaintance asked me what I did to spend more quality time with my family and I couldn't think of much. I realized then that I had become so consumed by my work that I had forgotten to make time for myself and my family life. The price of an ambitious future was very high.

To clarify - doing the work you love is not a bad thing. Of course, you need that “escape velocity” in early stages of your career or business. The question is at what cost?
From that first moment of parenting-guilt, I made a conscious effort to integrate my passion, my work and my personal life. And I found that not only did I feel more fulfilled, but I also became more productive and successful in my career.
So remember, what you do is a part of who you are, but it doesn't have to define you completely. #EnmeshmentTrap
Make time for yourself and the people you love.
Cheers to life, liberty, Relationships?and real estate!

1 年Do you think about work when you are not at work? Pretty Often. Do you bring up your career or your business within the first three minutes of any conversation? Not often...only because I've learned to separate. When someone asks you - tell me about yourself, what is the first thing you say? Is it your work? If I mention business to someone that doesn't know me, I just met or real estate, then it's generally more about the philosophy into why I do what I do. If it's about real estate, then I talk about what I do and how it can correlates to what they know do or know about real estate. Many people that are not in the business, think that everyone is a broker, lol. Outside of that, I have more interesting things to talk about.

1 年Funny, had this exact conversation yesterday ??Kunal Dewan??! It's easy to wrap our identity around the company and job we're in. Learned this the hard way after leaving corporate. I am ME...not a job title, company shill or anything else! Love it!
