How Do you Define Violence?

What the Workplace Violence Protection Law Says . . .

Beginning July 1, 2024, nearly all California employers are required to have Workplace Violence Protection Plan in place with all employees trained on and prepared to implement the plan. This is due to the passage of SB 553. Part of this new law includes categorizing and identifying the specific type of workplace violence involved in every incident. There are four of them.??

In case you’ve missed them, here is how California has defined the four types of workplace violence covered by the new law:

  • Type 1 Violence: workplace violence committed by a person who has no legitimate business at the worksite, including violent acts by anyone who enters the workplace or approaches workers with the intent to commit a crime.
  • Type 2 Violence: workplace violence directed at employees by customers, clients, patients, students, or visitors.
  • Type 3 Violence: workplace violence against an employee by a present or former employee, supervisor, or manager.
  • Type 4 Violence: violence committed in the workplace by a person who does not work there but has or is known to have had a personal relationship with an employee.

Keeping employees informed is the first essential step in navigating this complex law. Employees should all have a copy of the company’s Workplace Violence Prevention Plan and must receive comprehensive training to answer the following questions:

  • How to identify each type of potential workplace violence
  • How to report incidents
  • How to prevent potential workplace violence \

Being prepared for the implementation of SB 553 isn’t just a smart thing to do. It’s a mandate. Make sure you’re prepared.?
