How do you clean a Solid Surface countertop so that it will look as good as new ten years from now???♀?

Solid Surface is (in its simplest terms) man-made stone. It is well known in the industry as a tough, extremely durable, watertight, non porous product.

As the material is entirely nonporous, stains sit on the surface meaning that cleaning a Solid Surface product involves a simple process, it really is an incredibly easy to clean and hygienic product to choose.

So, what should be in the cleaning kit for your Solid Surface counter tops and sinks?

1.     Microfibre cloths

2.     Ordinary household cleaner that contains bleach

3.     Perhaps a washing up brush/ bathroom scourer

4.     Kitchen towel

5.     (Optional) Bar Keepers Friend*

*Bar Keepers Friend is approved for Corian, Hi Macs, Staron and all other brands, as it is quite a gentle bleach cleaner.

Below is a video produced by CD UK, which highlights the ease with which Corian and other Solid Surface products can be cleaned.

Contrary to popular belief, Solid Surface stains are easy to remove with just a little effort. In fact, even the most of horrible of stains (red wine, turmeric, curry etc) can be removed without the need for expensive cleaners or abrasive methods.

These simple cleaning instructions should take no more than a few minutes each day, they also take into consideration the need to be extra vigilant due to the Coronavirus pandemic:
  1. Wipe your counter tops over with warm soapy water, using a sponge,
  2. Then spray the antibacterial household cleaner across your tops.
  3. Leave to sit for a moment (read the instructions carefully) as this will help kill nasty viruses, such as COVID19 and germs.
  4. Using a damp microfibre cloth, wipe over,
  5. With a dry microfibre cloth or paper kitchen towel and give a buff up

Extra tip: If you have Solid Surface sinks, you might feel like giving them an occasional soak. If so, please follow these instructions:

?Shake some of the Bar Keepers Friend onto the sink

? Wet it slightly

?Using your brush, gently rub the mix in

? If you want you can add a little bleach and fill in water, leaving to soak for a while

? Once you have a drained, give a little sluice and wipe with a cloth

And… Voila - any stubborn stains are gone!

Solid Surface is non-porous and homogenous, which means it requires no sealing or ongoing maintenance. So, when it comes to cleaning, just a little TLC and elbow grease should do the trick.

Things you should avoid using on Solid Surface

Avoid using paint removers, oven cleaners and very strong chemicals on your solid surface products, as well as acetone nail polish. However, should you accidentally spill nail polish on your counter-top, you can use non acetone to remove it.

Solid Surface is a long term investment.

When looked after well, your Solid Surface product can last a lifetime, but at the very least the ten years it is warrantied for.

Great tips Nicola Barden I think we tend to just get the scouring pad and Jif out, without realizing that we could be damaging our worktops. Your designs are incredible by the way. ??

Very interesting. I never knew it was so simple to clean. I would also add, especially when used in kitchens, that if you manage to scratch it badly - highly unlikely, but I for one am terrible at "just quickly cutting a slice ofcucumber" without bothering to get a cutting board out - you can have it re-polished to get rid of the scratch(es) so it really does last you a lifetime.
