How do you choose a great Recruiter?

Sitting down to pen this article has taken me a little bit of time. It is very clear that the market is hot. The brain drain is well and truly in motion and two year’s worth of our top talent is leaving our shores. Between this, year-end pushes to fill remaining headcount, candidates moving in house, leaving their chosen industries due to burnout and general movement in the market, there’s never a season when recruiters are not striving to achieve the goal of filling the many job opportunities they have on their books.?

After seven years working in the recruitment industry it still surprises me when I talk to candidates and they explain to me what processes they have been through thus far and their perception of recruitment consultants. Lets face it, every industry has “the good, the bad and the ugly”. As a recruiter I am very aware and sensitive to the fact that I am managing real people's careers and how I personally represent them and manage this process directly affects their lives, and their families lives. It is a well known fact that changing jobs is in the top 10 of most stressful life events.

In my mind a great recruiter is someone who invests time in getting to know their candidate, understands what they are looking for, what their end goal is and what their top motivators are for leaving. They also set clear and transparent expectations, offer knowledge and insight into the employment market, give clear interview advice, support and guidance as well as manage a fair offer and acceptance process. If I do not fundamentally understand MY role from start to finish then how am I able to provide the best possible care?

So why can some recruiters just not get it right?

We will not contact your current employer until they know you are leaving and are comfortable with the process.? We will then check in monthly or bi monthly to ensure YOUR new role is what you were looking for and living up to that expectation.? Aftercare is key to ensure both parties are happy.
