Question

I earn ?100,000 a month in Abuja, but I want to relocate to Lagos on a ?200,000 salary a month. What is your counsel?

Answer

Congratulations on your pay raise!?

Rightly so, earning ?200,000 in different cities will translate to different outcomes, due to varying costs of living. However, to a large extent the cost of living in Abuja and Lagos is comparable.??

A major factor to consider is accommodation. Are there provisions for your accommodation? Rent in Lagos is quite pricey depending on the level of comfort and where you would like to live. It’s also important to consider commute time to your workplace when deciding where to live. If it’s possible to negotiate a completely remote role, please do. This will help you cut your expenses to a large extent, and give room for more savings and/or investment.

This should ultimately help you reach a decision.?

Question

I’m fresh out of school and about to start my NYSC. Although I graduated with a good grade, I’m not keen on pursuing a career with my course of study as the prospects there aren’t so promising. I’m considering making a career switch into tech since it pays more. I have started doing some online courses but still don’t feel confident that I am employable yet. I understand that time is passing and this can be costly, especially financially.?

What do you suggest I do to make this career transition without my finances suffering for it??

Answer

We always emphasise the need to invest in ourselves, as we are our greatest asset. This remains true till doomsday. As much as we don’t know your course of study, we at MoneyAfrica do not believe there’s any career choice without prospects. It’s also undisputable that some career choices are more marketable with better pay than others. Tech is probably the most desired occupation as of now, due to the attractive remuneration. However, most people make the mistake of not seeking guidance before starting their transition or journey into tech. As a result, before they even get started, they get exhausted. Tech is very broad ranging from data science, to product management, to software engineering. It’s therefore important to first understand the different options available to explore in tech so you can make your choice and hit the ground running.?

MoneyAfrica is currently partnering with Utiva to help shed light on this. The best part is that it’s for FREE. At Money Africa, we’re committed to your all-round growth and this is why we sought this partnership.?

Please register here to reserve a seat for yourself. The webinar is scheduled for today, August 26 by 4 pm. Feel free to share with your friends as well.?

Who says your transitioning into tech is a yardstick to earning 6-7 figures, I pray it is so though! I believe every career/field has a personality characteristic that enhances development, embraces success, and allows rest. There are a bunch of "we" out there who transitioned into tech but made nothing out of it. I like tech too though, I'm a student of the tech world, I work in the IT department of a bank, I studied a tech related course but with all this... whenever I think of success, valuable income, and rest...uhmmmm....my mind will always settle on publishing(publishing) and finance because that's what I'm good at, thats what expresses beauty to me but I have refused to sit at the table to write a book, nor do researches, nor study the world's financial analysis and forecast, why haven't I? "because the world claims the money is in tech". IF TECH HAS THE MONEY, WHAT'S TECH LEVERAGING ON? IF REAL ESTATE HAS THE MONEY,? WHAT'S THE ROCK ON WHICH IT STANDS? IF POLITICS HAS THE MONEY, WHAT ARE ITS MONOMERS(I'm a scientists, you know!) Every single bit of all is connected in some way, however your personality, your identity (strength, weakness and convictions) distinguishes the lot, separates you from all, defines where your rest is! Seems I talk too much, well my Mum do say so!!!
