How do you achieve BIG goals?

How do you achieve BIG goals?

Why do big dreams stay just that - dreams?

Why do those who have big ideas and goals never start or go off-track and give up quickly?

Why do so few create the momentum and progress to continue their journey and make significant progress in the direction of a BIG goal?

To help me answer these questions for myself (as well as help others) I flipped the numbers in my business name and came up with the 'power of 10' process. This is my process for breaking down big goals into a series of sub-goals and next best actions.

My business is called GiFT631. I grew up at a property numbered 631 Kenilworth Rd and 50 years later my mum still lives there. I kept seeing the number 631 - I would check my phone and the time would be 6:31, I would be on a treadmill and always notice when I had done 631 calories or run 6:31kms. I would see these numbers on a licence plate, hotel room - everywhere I was going I was drawn to them.

At the time, I thought it was a calling to go and see my elderly parents ( & I am grateful I did as my dad passed away late last year). I live in Australia whilst 631 is in the English Midlands.

Then I heard someone talking about how they are full of big ideas and bigger dreams but they never even get started - their dreams remain dreams.

The next morning I went for a run, which never fails to clear my head, and then sat with my journal making the most of my 'Mozart time'. This is time for myself, by myself and with myself. It is technology and interuption free time as part of my daily 4M process.

Playing with thoughts on how I achieve my own ambitions, the power of 10 was born. I flipped 631 to become 1+3+6.

It represents establishing:

1x Purpose or really big goal - spending Mozart time to establish what matters most in your life and what you really want to achieve. Turning this into a SMUUT goal.

3x Sub or Short-term goals - breaking the newly established SMUUT goal into a series of smaller goals.

6x Next best Actions - turning the intent into action to create momentum.

This created a process to ground my big goals and help me make consistent progress. I can 'set and forget' the 1 and focus on the 3 and the 6. This is important to avoid being overwhelmed by the size and scale of what is ahead. It ensures you can go big and act small.

The 3 and the 6 are fluid. Every time an action or sub-goal is completed, it is replaced. Certain actions might need to be repeated daily or as frequently as required. I have found that 6 is an ideal number - when there are too many actions to complete there is a tendency to avoid starting. 1 or 2 actions are not enough to create progress, 'quick wins' and momentum. Momentum builds confidence, belief and the motivation to continue. Crossing through the actions and then the sub-goals feels great - you can see and sense the progress.

However small, success breeds success!
