Trusting Our Body

How do we trust our body to create generative transformative actions in the world?

My battle with a persistent cough these past weeks and my post about it on Saturday led me to the idea for this newsletter edition about how we can learn to trust our bodies more to come to generative transformative actions in the world.

The quest for heightened performance, whether in traditional education, or corporations often leads to a disconnection from our innate bodily signals. We systematically learn to disregard them rather to let them guide us.

However, embracing a practice of tuning into our bodily sensations can pave the way for a more authentic, meaningful, and ultimately, more productive and generative work environment.

This practice not only enriches our organizational culture but also casts a wider lens on our interaction with the environment, hinting at a holistic approach to performance.

Recognizing Bodily Signals

The journey towards a holistic performance begins with recognizing our bodily signals. For instance, during this period of my persistent cough, I had to pause and listen to what my body was communicating.

Similarly, in our daily work routine, acknowledging sensations like discomfort or unease can be the first step towards fostering a more authentic dialogue.

Translating Sensations into Meaningful Dialogue

Consider a scenario where during a team discussion about an upcoming project, you feel a tightness in your chest. Instead of ignoring it, you voice your concern, "I feel a sense of apprehension discussing this project's deadlines."

This honest acknowledgment could open up a dialogue about realistic timelines or resource allocation.

However, in a culture unaccustomed to such openness, your expression might be overlooked. The challenge then is to cultivate such culture where embodied expressions are heard and valued.

It might start with leaders modeling this behavior, creating safe spaces for honest dialogue, or even training sessions to foster this culture of authenticity.

Reframing Performance

Traditionally, performance in organizations has been measured in quantitative terms—revenue, targets, growth percentages etc. However, a holistic approach to performance encompasses not just what we achieve, but how we achieve it and its sustainability over time.

When individuals and teams are encouraged to tune into their bodily sensations and express their concerns or ideas authentically, it creates a foundation for meaningful interactions and innovative solutions.

It's about shifting from a culture of relentless pursuit of targets to one of sustainable, holistic achievement.

The Ripple Effect on Organizational Collaboration

This practice of recognizing and expressing embodied sensations fosters a culture of trust and openness, which is crucial for effective collaboration. It's about creating a human-centric work environment where individuals can show up as they are, contributing to a more authentic and innovative organizational culture.

A Wider Lens: Reflecting on Our Environmental Interactions

The practice of tuning into our bodies and translating sensations into meaningful dialogue extends beyond organizational walls. It mirrors how we interact with our environment.

When we start acknowledging how environmental degradation actually starts within us, how we deal with our own bodies (e.g. how we overexploit), we can shift the narrative and how we deal with our environment accordingly.

This systemic acknowledgment can lead to more sustainable and compassionate decision-making, aligning with the holistic performance ethos.

Conclusion

Embracing the practice of recognizing our bodily sensations and translating them into meaningful dialogue is a step towards more authentic interactions and a holistic approach to performance.

It's about fostering a culture of authenticity and empathy, which is pivotal in creating a ripple effect of positive transformation in our organizations and the world at large.

Beautifully put.....practicing psychological safety within, and how it becomes the innate responsibility of every employee to immunize. I may not be able to put it correctly, but this quote from the article sums up 'When individuals and teams are encouraged to tune into their bodily sensations and express their concerns or ideas authentically, it creates a foundation for meaningful interactions and innovative solutions.'
