How do we SOLVE BIG problems and TEST NEW ideas at Dream11?

Dream11 is the most widely used fantasy sports app in India today. With more than 12 crore users, Dream11 has made sure the hardcore sports fans have the best experience while making a fantasy team. Over the years, Dream11 has scaled unimaginably as an organisation. Not only has it been the top fantasy sports app; it has also become one of the most dynamic organisations in India, culture-wise.

This journey has been incredible so far, and we plan to stop nowhere soon. But throughout this journey, we have made many changes to increase the team efficiency. As the number of Sportans kept growing, it was necessary to streamline processes. Because in a fast-paced start-up like Dream11, if proper measures are not taken at the right moment, things can go south very quickly. We soon realised that we needed to become agile, adapt to different conditions as quickly as possible and we did that quite successfully.

Since sports is something that we cater to, we thought of having our values and culture themed around sports. When you work at Dream11, you experience the whole sports vibe. To give some examples:

  • We call our office stadium.
  • We call our managers captains.
  • We call our departments leagues.

If you come to visit our stadium, you’ll have one hell of a sporty experience. We breathe sports, and we live sports. We make sure the employees are living their dreams. We recently sent a group of employees on an entirely sponsored trip to England to watch their favourite football teams. Once you live such experiences, only then the employees can resonate to the passion of a sports fan and give out the best possible product.

Sports also inspires the structure of the organisation. There are various clubs throughout the floor, for example, Brand Marketing, Product Content, Talent Acquisition, etc., that collaborate and push each other to make better decisions. Collaboration is something that we do quite regularly and at every level. Like the Indian Cricket Team or Manchester United (Manchester City, at least for the last few seasons now), we strongly believe that we have the best team and the best fantasy sports app experience gets delivered to our users when these great minds come together.

We follow the HEAL process here, which stands for Hypothesis-Experiment-Actual-Learnings. We are ready to innovate, always. There is a specific hypothesis attached to every task/project that we work on. If we wish to stay atop, which we have successfully, experimenting is necessary.

Talking about looking at the brighter side of failing, we prefer failing faster than later. Because at least it gives us the time to make the necessary changes and avoid doing them next time around. Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) are something we are currently exploring, where every team has specific responsibilities which they move towards achieving.

In this 14-year journey, we have had our share of learnings in building the best fantasy sports app for the enthusiastic sports fans of India. We will constantly experiment and innovate with our working practices as we look to give the best possible user experience.
