How do we learn?
Gregg Huberty details different learning types for better presentations in the new year

How do we learn?

If you’re like me, the start of a new year marks a time to focus inward and set goals for learning and growth in the year ahead. It’s a time to reflect on the previous year, celebrate wins and learn from losses. For many, the new year marks a starting point to learn something new which brought the question to mind – How do we learn?

Have you ever been to a presentation, lesson or training class where in the end you can’t remember a thing about the content? Maybe you recall the presenter’s name or the topic but none of the specific points or key takeaways that were intended.

There are 3 basic ways to learn; seeing, hearing, and feeling. About 50% of people learn by seeing, which means that they must see it, for example, on a whiteboard, in a book, in a slide deck, or in a video. About 40% of people learn by hearing, for example, a teacher’s lecture, a podcast or someone speaking directly to you. Lastly, about 10% of everyone learns by feeling. This learning type is the hardest to teach because the learner must feel it/experience it to fully grasp the lesson or topic.

Another thing to consider with learning, teaching and presenting is that about 33% of the content is retained. For this reason, teachers, presenters and writers often repeat the content 3 times or more in hopes that everyone has the chance to absorb it.

Incorporating these different learning styles for yourself and in your own presentations can help ensure that you or your audience come away with the knowledge intended.

At Boom, we appeal to the different learning styles in our approach to our clients and partners. We offer live video demonstrations that illustrate our key features and specs in a variety of ways allowing people to see, hear, and even feel the quality for themselves. This method has proven to be a successful one and we truly believe that seeing, hearing and feeling leads to true learning. [schedule a live demo here]

To recap, we learn in a variety of ways; seeing, hearing and feeling, and we retain about 30% of what we learn so repetition is helpful.
