How do we define project controls?
I would like to define Project Controls this way, A set of functions empowering the project team and stakeholders to plan, monitor, measure and control the elements of the project to facilitate desired results in the deliverables.
Being a big fan of the game of Cricket, Let me take the example of an one day international cricket match. It's a project for the playing teams. The objectives of the project is to win the match with desirable goals like finish with enough balls to spare and keeping wickets in hand. Under the scope of project controls the following are considered. Detailed planning and preparation before the match as well as ongoing planning. The cost is the wickets and consumption of overs/balls. The captain is the project manager. Once the plan is chalked out, the team starts performing as per plan. The scoreboard provides information such as scoring rate, required run rate. Based on the trend the forecast is calculated and players make necessary adjustments to accelerate or consolidate the innings. They also manage risks like deadly bowlers from opposition, unfavourable weather and pitch conditions, loss of wickets, injuries etc. and anchor the game to reach objective.
