How Do We Define Cultural Appropriation?

How Do We Define Cultural Appropriation?

In April 2017 on ‘The View’ Whoopi Goldberg said ‘If we’re going to go with cultural appropriation, wear natural hair. Cause if we’re wearing white lady hair, then isn’t that appropriation?’

How Do We Define Cultural Appropriation?

There is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation and the lines get blurred. In this documentary I wanted to show audiences the difference, as I don’t think it is made clear, for example in 2016 MTV UK called Kim Kardashian’s cornrows ‘boxer braids’. Calling cornrows ‘boxer braids’ is cultural appropriation, because cultural appropriation is taking something from another culture and getting the praise and credit for it. If you love Nigerian food and you are from another culture, host a dinner celebrating the culture and the food that is appreciation of the culture.

To produce this documentary I recruited participants via the casting website ‘Star Now’ and began shooting interviews throughout February and March 2017. For this documentary I wanted to get the opinions of young black women to share their opinion on the issue as in recent years black culture has been one of the main cultures which celebrities such as, Katy Perry, Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus and many more have been accused of culturally appropriating. I interviewed 4 women from around the UK who were able to share specific examples of the differences between cultural appropriation and appreciation.
