How do we build Sweden’s new energy system?

Sweden is facing a massive expansion of its energy system. Meeting future energy needs – and achieving the green industrial transition – will require SEK 1,000 billion in investment, a 2,500 km transmission network, and electricity that equals the construction of 11,000 wind turbines or 12 new nuclear power reactors.

Debate on energy policy often centers on the types of energy that are needed but rarely addresses how our new energy system should be built. I am convinced that NCC, as a leading construction company in the Nordics, can help solve this challenge. We have vital construction know-how. That is why today we are publishing a report (Energirapport | NCC) and holding a panel discussion (LinkedIn) together with Energif?retagen Sverige on how we can work together to expand our energy system.

NCC can reduce delays and cost increases, and also help expand the energy system faster, if we can share our knowledge and expertise in the early stages of projects. But our politicians also need to set the right conditions for expansion. Reforms must be made in three key areas if we are to achieve our climate goals, accelerate the green industrial transition in the north and meet future energy demands:

·??????Shorten lead times in planning, construction and permitting processes. The energy system is facing a major expansion and it needs to happen within a short timeframe.

·??????Ensure the supply of materials. The availability of raw materials and products is crucial to the expansion of the energy system. We need to reduce vulnerabilities, climate impact and dependence on imports by increasing local material production.

·??????Ensure the supply of skills in the construction sector. A long-term plan is needed to meet the skills needs in the construction sector.
